GIF button in messenger crossed out?

Anyone have an explanation as to why the GIF button is crossed out in messenger? I can't seem to be able to find an answer anywhere! Kinda really want to try it out...

How about some basic details about your phone, carriers, what you did before this happened, how you've tried to fix it?

It is a nexus 6p. I did nothing, I got the 7.1.1 update and was reading about its features and saw that Android includes a baked in gif feature now like iPhone does. Went to check it out and it just says gif with a line through it...
