Gingerbread is going to end Android Fragmentation!!!

i dotn mind them uniting it under one "brand" but for people that prefer sense etc i hope 3.0 is universally appealing to all of us

I remember Google buying out BumpTop and some other mobile software designers and I think it has something to do with Android 3.0. If I remember right, the mobile software designers were in the middle of something huge right when Google got their attention...

HTC, Moto, Samsung, and any other manufacture needs to make there skins install program that you can buy from the market and just put the phone out stock and then let the end user decide what to do with it... They could have it preinstalled but if you could uninstall it would be the main thing... this way when new android comes out they just have to push the stock and update there software asap and put out an update on the market... better for all end users... let them focus on the hardware and software separate so we get better interfaces and better phones...

Oi oi oi.

You do realize that Android owes Sense a lot of its success don't you? And I don't think HTC is going to just give up their distinctive UI. More likely they will continue to use Sense, but possibly make it so you can switch to stock Gingerbread.

Then again , given how ugly (IMHO) the stock interface has been so far I'll believe Gingerbread gets it right when I see it.

Would be nice if they offered themes which resembled previous versions. This would allow people to use the theme they wanted and not have to switch phones or carriers for a UI.

Do we have any early screen shots or anything? I really like the sense ui but do think the fragmentation hurts android in the long run.

Please, no locking down! I don't mind if they clear out the custom UIs by default AS LONG AS they allow you to choose if you want to put it on or not. I've come from an iPhone, which was super locked down (obviously) and have so far enjoyed the almost open source of Android.

One thing that everyone forgets is that Android is open source software. HTC can put any UI they like on an Android phone, Google doesn't make rules that say it has to look a certain way.

Google is attempting to end fragmentation by changing the release cycle to yearly instead of every 6 months, not mandating what the UI will be.

The OP talks about unification of Android by making everyone have the same (stock) UI. For me, this goes against what Android is. After all, look at all the customizable home screen replacements you can get and the hundreds of themes for them. The fact is, If I changed hardware tomorrow my new phone could look the same as my old one whatever the OEM may think I want.

I think that a lot of the hatred towards Sense et al, is the perception that the OEM customisation is responsible for the major delay in updates, but I don't think this is correct. the fact that most android phones have different hardware and the fact that OEM and Carrier testing needs to be far more rigorous than most people realise is the main culprit, that and the OEM's not always getting with the program. But AFAIK all capable handsets have now been promised Froyo within 2 Months. I say let the OEM's do what they like and just do your own thing with their thing once you get it.

Google may improve the UI on Gingerbread but that's not gonna stop HTC, Samsung, and Motorola from adding their own UI skins and widgets. As has been said before in this thread Android is open source and they can do what they want. However, if the stock US was more appealing then they would be less likely to make such complicated skins.

I am so sick of the Sense hatred, it is a thousand times better than the stock UI. There is really only one thing I dont like and that's the lack of the 3D gallery and thanks to XDA developers, there is a version I was able to download and install on my DInc. You can always remove any widgets you don't want. The trick here is to get more device manufacturers to do like Moto has done with the X and make the memory so large that it does not matter that you have extra stuff on it that you don't use since there is so much memory to spare. The ability to turn off the custom interface is nice I suppose but I still think that if you don't like Sense, Motoblur, TouchWiz or whatever buy a different phone, There are tons out there and more on the way.

What I would like to see though is for Google to put the stock launcher, email app, contacts app, etc in the market so users can download them if they want. I'd also like to see them find a way to reward/encourage hardware manufacturers to use the most recent OS and upgrade to the most recent OS within a reasonable (say two month) time-frame of it's release.

True.. HTC has already said that whatever UI comes with android 3.0 a.k.a gingerbread but it's sense will be there.

I doubt Moto, Sammy, or HTC will stop making skins. They see it as a way to differentiate their phones from the competition and attract users. And lets face it, for a completely new Android user, these skins are often quite useful over stock Android.

Hopefully though phones will be released every now and then with stock on them.

I don't think there should be necessarily one UI or locking it down. However, I do feel that if android is going to be about choice, users shouldn't be forced to use a OEM skin if they don't want to. There should be a easy way to turn it off in settings.

Sense is the only reason I got an Evo. I honestly had no idea what I could have done with an Android device. Every time I saw a Stock Android device I was so turned off by the look. I played with the Incredible and was in awe of the Sense UI. Android IMO was an afterthought and I consider myself a big phone nerd. You don't understand the possibility of a Android device till you have one in your hand.

Now I think every phone manufacturer needs to allow the stock Android to be used. Cause Motorola can't make an Android skin if their life depended on it. FailBlur is horrible to look at! At least with stock you have different launchers in the App Market.

I played with my bro's Incredible and Sense is good but I like stock + Launcher Pro way better. It's not cluttered like Sense and doesn't lag. As soon as I get my Incredible im putting Launcher pro on it.

Just saw my friend's desire running new official froyo. It's awesome with sense. No lag.

What's cluttered? If you don't like some of the widgets drag them to the garbage and they are gone!

Third party launchers are nice but when you use one of them often the phone manufacturer's custom widgets don't work.
