Glass Back

Hey all,

I'm really interested in this phone. It's the right size (could even be a tad smaller for my liking). Glass backed phones don't have a very good history. What are your thoughts or takes on this one?

For reference, I don't put cases on my phone, but do take absolute good care of them. I don't want a phone that develops a random crack of the glass back from temperature change, nor one that develops a bunch of hairline scratches from just siting on a surface from time to time.

So, what is everyone thinking about the glass back on this phone?

Glass back is good. It's not so easy to crack unless heavy impact or crash. And if you worry about the scratches, you can stick a piece of screen protector which also can keep the glass from fingerprint and dust. You know Z1C has applied the plastic back cover, but many Z1C owners change the plastic cover with Z1f glass back cover. So i think the glass back is more popular.

It's Gorilla Glass i think. But for extra protection, get a tempered glass screen protector for the front and back.

Im curious about this too. I prefer going naked (my phone that is!) and am worried about the glass backing. To be completely honest, Im one of those "premium build" skeptics coming from an S3. Metal and glass are not very good shock absorbers compared to plastic and most people I know who desire a "premium build" phone usually end up covering all the premium with a plastic case...never made sense to me.
So aside from the "feels and looks nice" aspects (which it does!) how do glass backed phones really stand up? Anybody else confident or nervous about this style of build?

The first week i got my Z3C, i dropped it, and it cracked completely along the length of the back. The drop was so insignificant, i thought nothing of it, til a week later when i noticed it. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!

I'm not at all thrilled by the prospect of owing another glass back phone. IMO it adds weight and makes the thing fragile and I'm happy everyone else has moved on. Unfortunately this phone nails about everything else I'm looking for so I'll take it.

IMO if they put a soft touch plastic back on like the Nexus 5 and added wireless charging how great would that be?

Expect that in the z4 compact. For now, I'm going to get the rhino shield which for $30, gives you front and back protection.

That would get me to buy it. This six month cycle isn't all bad.

That would be awesome.

In the meantime, I'm looking for a screen protector for back. Not so much for protection, but because it's too slippery. So I'm not interested in glass. Looking for plastic with some friction.

DON'T but the Rhino Shield for the back, many reports on XDA of the camera/flash hole is too small and causing major problems with the camera. Front Rhino Shield also is interfering with some cases, the Cruzerlite for sure.

I'm thinking the 6 month cycle of releases is probably over for Sony, they are losing too much money and this certainly is a big reason. This is my first Sony phone and I think its the best smartphone I've owned, their added features and UI are useful. Last few phones I've had are the 2013 Moto X, Nexus 4, Galaxy Nexus so I did prefer stock Android.

It's been said that the loses was from their lower end phones not selling well. Sony is now only focusing on their high end devices from here on out. This would mean the Z line. So with that, I think the 6 month cycle would still be a go. But having said that. It hasn't been with the compact. There was no z2 compact so it might be annual anyway.

I'd be happy with 3 month releases for Sony's flagship devices - I know my Z3C will soon be the old model and I'm fine with that.
