GMAIL and Hangout Unread Count in Shortcut bar?

I am very curious if there is a way to see an unread counter for gmail and hangouts using the base launcher that comes with 4.4. Previously using Nova Launcher to do this in 4.3 but want to try to stick with the default launcher in 4.4 for now. Looking to see unread counts in the shortcut bar at the bottom of the screen and I cannot drag an unread widget into that area.
