Gmail app sync

I downloaded the gmail app awhile ago and just noticed when i put pics to my contacts that it synced the people ive emailed on my gmail account onto my contacts..ive tried doing the do not sync contacts and only sync gmail option but those people are still there. Anyway to remove them??

Could it be the Gmail setting "Create contacts for auto-complete?" I see that if I go to my Gmail settings in a browser (on a computer, not on the phone) under General. The options are "When I send a message to a new person, add them to Other Contacts so that I can auto-complete to them next time" or "I'll add contacts myself," but I think the former is the default.
