Gmail app very unreliable

Don't get me wrong I love my Xoom... but the reliability of the Gmail app is awful for checking mail. I've got the 3G Xoom, but use Wifi while home or at work. I have two accounts added for email. I will clear the app cache, it will work for a couple days then again no new email will come in unless I hit refresh. What's interesting is I'll notice it gets progressively worse. It will start out pretty instant, then lag an hour, then a couple hours, then several hours, then completely stop. Rebooting has no effect, clear the cache, and again it works for a little while. Am I the only one? Considering GMail is one of their bread and butter services, I would think it should be a bit more reliable :)

I haven't had this issue, and I use my Xoom with both personal and business Gmail accounts. I have had some tardiness and flakiness with the Calendar on my phone (Froyo), but usually a "clear application data" will take care of that for a long while. I haven't experienced the same flakiness with the Xoom (yet).

To resolve syncing issues with Calendar and Gmail, you need to "Clear application data", not "Clear cache." This will force a complete reload of the account and reinitialize syncing. You account look ominously empty for a little while while doing the initial sync--all your account information should return in short order.

Cheers.

While I haven't had the synch issues that you are having with the Gmail app, considering how Android is a Google product, one would think that they would make the Gmail app more powerful. This iteration doesn't come close to touching the usefulness of the web interface. Heck, even the Gingerbread native Gmail app is better than the Honeycomb version.

Just my two cents.

Cheers,
Josh

I have the exact symptoms as the OP, every few days it will stop pushing mail, sometimes hitting refresh will at least show my current email. But this never restores the push, for that clearing the data is what is needed.

I have a Xoom WIFI only, 3.1, not rooted. There are two gmail accounts, perhaps this is the common problem. This really isn't going to work for non-technical people.

This isn't user error, it is a major bug that needs to be found. Where does one contact google about bugs like this?

Also found others having this exact problem:

3.1 Honeycomb = BROKEN GMAIL PUSH!

Same Gmail problems here. But I only have one account syncing to it. And like the rest, the issue did not happen until after upgrading to 3.1

Stock, no root.

no question now that this was broken by the upgrade to 3.1 All seem to have the identical timing. The refresh button always works for me, but that is no solution.
Where in holy Xoom is the "clear application data" that is mentioned. (unfriendly, no manual, no help, no user friendly, no intuitive product)

Go to your tablet Settings..Applications...Manage Applications...select your application...select "Clear application data".

Cheers.

That's what I had meant in my first post for clearing the cache, my mistake :) I suppose I could do a reset and see what happens but really don't want to.

To me it doesn't work as well as the ones on Mobile Devices I get a notification on my Nexus S before my Xoom and that is when my Nexus S is asleep and I am using my Xoom. It needs work for sure. Still better than the email app on the iPad.

Clearing the app data for gmail only seems to work for a couple days. I've had to do it three times so far.

Works perfectly, and notifies at the exact same time as my EVO4G. Got kind of irritating hearing the dueling notifications, so I turned off the sound on the Xoom.

You guys sure you are set up correctly? Or perhaps an app pulling your mail?

I haven't noticed any real lag. Sometimes they hit my Xoom first sometimes they hit my Incredible first. It is always close though. Is it possible something else is slowing everybody down? I mean are you running another email client as well?

mine usually hit my xoom first then my fascinate, although i have notice the xoom being funny with emails lately,

The problem happens every few days... it isn't happening to everyone but for those with the problem it seems consistent.

It isn't just a delay, the push stops completely.

I just use the gmail app with the gmail widget resized.

I will remove widget and see if that is the problem.

Also I have 2 gmail accounts but someone has posted that this issue happens for them with one account.

it happens to me all the time - this is a bad bug cause now i use my phone to notify me of email instead of xoom
