Gmail contacts vs. Droid Contacts

I'm confused as to how the contacts propagate from Gmail to the Droid. I have 259 contacts in my Gmail contact list, and 269 on my Droid. From my research, if anything it should be the other way around due to the Droid merging contacts. I can't figure you how or why I have more on my Droid than I do in my Gmail contacts list. Shouldn't they be identical?

Any ideas?

I've pared my Gmail contacts down to 240. When I try to do a manual sync on the Droid, I get "Sorry! The process com.google.process.gapps has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." every time.

I know there are at least a few contacts that I manually entered on the droid that haven't made it to Gmail. Any ideas why? I thought it was supposed to be a two way sync between the two.

Google will sync contacts in your "My Contacts" group. If you go into the web version, its a lot easier to edit and there is an option to find dupes and merge them.

It should be two way sync. I can change them on either end and the changes show up. Try Settings > Accounts & Sync > Check Auto-Sync, then click on your gmail account. In there make sure you have Sync Contacts (and others) checked ..

Therein lies the problem. All my Gmail contacts are listed in 'My Contacts'. I have autosync turned on. When I try to resync it, I get the 'The Process com.google.process.gapps has stopped unxpectedly. Please try again.' error message, every time. The I have to Force Close it.

I have auto sync turned on, but it's obviously not syncing.

My sync'ing has been really good but I have heard of other people removing the gmail account and re-adding it to resync properly ..

I had to resync my contacts four or five times until I got no merged contacts or duplicates when I first got my droid. I think the biggest problem I had was transferring leads over from my BB to my new phone, then syncing all my gmail contacts.

It's not Facebook. I turned that off a while ago. I can see at least 3 different contacts in my Gmail 'My Contacts' that don't show up on my phone. I've even edited them thinking the change would push them through, but nope. I'll try deleting the Gmail account and re-adding it to see if that makes any difference.

Crap, I can't delete the Gmail account as it's my primary account. I can only do a factory reset. That's a huge pain in the @$$.

I'm not sure if this will fix your problem but it is worth a shot before doing a factory reset: Problems with sync - Mobile Help

this disclaimer was also added by someone who did this process so be aware:

DISCLAIMER: Do this only if you all your contact data is in gmail contacts and you do not have contact information in the phone that is not in gmail contacts. This will erase your contact data, recent calls, and contact favorites in the phone, so you will lose any contacts in the phone that are not in gmail contacts. You have been warned.

Hope this helps
