Gmail/Google wants my date of birth

Gmail/Google Play services wants my birthday "to comply with the law". Anyone know if it's really required? Below is the notice received on my Android tablet:

"Add your birthday

johndoe@gmail.com

Your date of birth is missing. This info is needed to comply with the law.

Month
Day
Year

This won't make your birthday public
Your age may be used for personalization across Google, including to make the ads you see more relevant to you."

Yes, the devs set the platform to require some data to be entered, something needs to be entered. The law is important of course, and if you're under 13 ask your moms to set you up. If that's not the case, everyone lies on the internet; protect your privacy and be born in 1940-something with the other tin foil hatters 8).

I believe it asks for it almost immediately on setup, but if you're past that already, log in to Google from a browser and check the 'personal info' then 'Birthday' drop down menu in the settings to update it.

i want to bump this i keep getting this every once in awhile on my phone google play service gmail i dismissed it because i'm old don't want to put it in

why do i have to put this is is true that if i keep dismissing my google account will be suspended/deleted or what

if i decide to put it in if i go into google account add it in on computer birthday<-which i never done will it also stop notify me on my phon?

What app is asking for this? I have never experienced this before. However, maybe I populated a fake birthday a long time ago somewhere and never looked back.

Goggle required it from me in a notification a month or two ago. I have often lied here and there, but not to Mr Goggle.

They can, or do - I don't know which - disable your Google account if you do not provide the required information during the 14-day period allowed.

In my case, I'd be surprised if they did not already know long before this became a requirement. But, I recently received an email about driving using Google Assistant. I have no car. Surely G knows this?

The actual law is known as The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA). Basicly, Google collects personal information and uses that information to sell advertising. But that law is very protective towards children's information, and Google has to follow more rules. The purpose of the "law" - actually it is a rule published by the FTC to implement the law - is to avoid "conditioning a child's participation in a game, the offering of a prize, or another activity on the child's disclosing more personal information than is reasonably necessary to participate in such activity." Google needs nothing more than my stating that I am over the age of 13. Google REQUIRING my birthdate is another example of Google over-reach in order to better direct advertisements that they feel are most productive for my age.

You have to put in a birthdate or your account will be locked or closed. It is for legal reasons so you need to comply. Just make up a date but remember it because if your account is ever compromised this is a question they will ask you in order to verify you.

And again rather than wait pop up come on phone again do you think since already logged in Firefox on computer Gmail go into date of birth put in save will not get notify on phone or will I still get notify and have to put it in there

I'd think that if you log into your google account via a web browser and address the situation, any google pop-ups will eventually stop on your phone.

its odd i don't understand why few mins ago i still get notify on phone google play service wanting date of birth despite i just manually put it in on computer past week, however strange thing is now all of a sudden sorry page won't load on phone wifi or moible date it just trys to loads and closes

before i manually put this in on computer since last month when notify me google play service when click on it page will load so now why all of a sudden it won't load? all i could do swipe

did i make a mistake and should had put it on phone instead computer and notification would had stop notify me on phone surely my gmail google account is ok since i manually put it in computer and eventually it will stop notify me on phone

account will not get deleted/suspended and i should just ignore aka swipe it eh

i'm very confused what is going on now

Did you make a new account ? That's usually only time I can see them ask that information.

no they been doing that to me since near end of april stupid law want to see old enough used account i never put my date of birth on my google/gmail account only reason why i did it few days ago i thought will never get notify on sorry phone but what i don't know when notify me why stupid page won't load when i click on it why does it trys to load/spin and then close<-if i did this on phone i bet it would had went away instead of manually computer

i'm going to chat google play store again few mins apprently they left when i chatted with them awhile ago didn't understand what i was saying to them

well person claims it will stop despite that i manually put it in and account will not get deleted suspended wouldn't explain to me why all of a sudden when it notify me on phone page loads and closes out when on wifi and mobile data

it did load numerous times in past before i put it manually on computer recently

i don't know if i should chat with them again or what i think he refuse to click on link/picture i posted in chat btw in a hurry have to close chat meh

Try with different agent tomorrow maybe get different results
