Pixel 3a fully updated. Notifications turned on. Sync turned on. My Gmail is not updating unless I open the app and manually swipe down to get new messages. I am using Total wireless which is a Verizon MVNO.

Any ideas?

I don't have any ideas at the moment, other than double checking all Label Notifications, Inbox Notifications, etc and making sure (double sure) all specific notifications are On. The same thing just randomly started happening recently with my father-in-law's Moto E6. I never did figure out why, buy honestly never spent much time looking into it due to a family emergency.

Any power-saving modes turned on, or 3rd party battery saver apps?

The answer to your question is no. I have tried every tip I can find on the internet. The only thing thing I have not done is a factory reset and I am extremely reluctant to do it.

Try resetting it, long press it tap info then scroll to storage and clear its data, cache, force stop.

Yes can be used in the background
When you long press it and tap info scroll to notification tap the notification area for another sub menu see if these things are toggle on
Make sure DND not in use or u have to allow Gmail with that.Screenshot_20200809-224942.jpeg

Everything is as you suggested. I am exhausted and will pick this up tomorrow.
Thanks for all help
I'll see what happens tomorrow

It shouldn't require this, but try also turning off Battery Optimization for that app.

Ok , let see
Your welcome!

I bit the bullet and did a hard factory reset and it solved the problem.😁 I'm shocked at how easy it was too do. I have not had to do one in 4-5 years and the process seems to have become a hell of a lot less of a pain, it just takes time for the updates

Thanks for all your help
