Gmail notification icon no longer working on S5

All of the sudden the icon which appears on upper right to notify of new email through gmail is no longer working. I have the S5 on Verizon.

Any suggestions on what I can try to resolve the issue? Please help. Thanks.

Have you tried going in to the GMail app and going in to the settings to see if the notifications is checked?

Yes, that box is checked.

I just realized that none of the emails are syncing even though that option is checked also.

How can I resolve this?

Go in to your settings and go to accounts and make sure they are set to sync.

That's my issue. The box is checked and says it's syncing. However, that's not actually happening.

Go in to the app and see what the sync frequency is, when it does it.

Where is the option see the sync frequency? On my S5, within gmail settings, I only have sync gmail and days of mail to sync?

Days of mail to sync is what I was referring to. Some people said that somehow theirs got changed to 0 and it would not sync. Make sure it is on 30.

Yes, it's already on 30 days. Just tried deleting and re-adding the account but it did not help.
