Gmail notification preview stopped working

I'm not sure when it happened but my gmail no longer previews the sender and subject of incoming mail in the notification bar like sms and voice does. It just notifies of a new message but no content.
I can't seem to find a setting to turn it back on. It stopped on both my wife's and my Xs.
I know Gmail Notifier will probably fix it, but I'm curious if there is a way to reenable it natively.

Any ideas?

I've never seen it preview that information. Mine has always shown the new message and number of unread emails only.

I cant get it to show number of new messages, just a general notification that there is new mail. I would at least like to have some info.
Weird.
Anyhow I'll play around with Gmail Notifier.
