New problem....Galaxy S3 phone has been working fine for a long time, but now I only get gmail updates if the wifi is turned on. Other email accounts are working normally with 3G/4G. Gmail works fine when Wifi is turned on.

Here's what I tried already:

1 - Cycled the power on the S3.

2 - Verified that mobile data is turned on (should be obvious since the other email accounts update normally).

3 - Verified that Gmail is still set to sync, notification are turned on, and download attachments (automatically on wifi) boxes are checked. I have toggled these off and on several times with no change to the issue.

4 - I cleared the cache on gmail.

The best I've gotten it to do with wifi off is show the message count in the Inbox, but not display them. It looks like it's constantly trying to sync, but never updates or shows the messages in the inbox. Turning the wifi back on corrects the issue in moments.

No ideas what else to try, guys.....any suggestions? It sucks not being able to get my gmails unless I'm connected to wifi.

Thanks in advance!

So it won't sync if you open the app or request a sync manually unless WiFi is on? It almost sounds like a setting, but it sounds like you've explored that possibility. The only other thing I can think of besides what you've already mentioned is uninstalling the updates. You can do this from Google Play by going to the app page. I would try it without the updates, and see if it works, then install the updates and see if it works. I'm just wondering if something happened while updating that caused a glitch or if the update isn't any good.

Well, last night I blew the gmail setting away and recreated it. Now it will MANUALLY update with wifi on or off. But what the heck happened to automatically updating, at least one some type of interval? It seems to ONLY manually update now. What gives?

Try: Settings, More, Application Manager, Gmail, Clear data. This will erase any drafts or unsent emails, but everything else will survive. Then reboot the phone. I had to do this once about a year ago and never had an issue since.

Thanks. That seems to have fixed it. I'll keep everyone posted if the issue returns.
