Can I turn off either auto sync or background data and still get Gmail push notifications?

I don't believe so as auto sync and background data are the ways your phone gets the data (in this case your emails from Gmail) in order to push it to your phone. If you turned those off I believe the only way you would get new emails would be to manually go into Gmail and click on refresh. No new data coming in, no push notifications.
