Gmail split screen

When I click links in my Gmail that open the browser, they come up in a split screen. How do I stop that? On my screen shot i clicked the little bar at the top and i got the options to open the app tray, minimize one of the windows, make the window full screen , and then the x for closing it out completely. I don't want to have to click for those options every time . I want whatever I click to always open in full screen.

I don't think there's a way to get around that, apart from using the tablet in Portrait orientation instead.
