Gmail "Talk" app issue

I'd like to use Gmail, but I dont want to enable the Google chat "Talk" feature. It seems to me that the "Sign Out" option is broken. I believe I got it to signed off successfully like two times since owning this phone. Now, it's not even signing off properly. I could tell its signed off because when starting up the Talk app again, there's a loading screen that says logging in or something similar. I even have the "Automatically Sign in" unchecked. Does anybody have this problem or know how to get around this? I'd like to disable Talk but still be able to receive pushes for my emails.

Why do you think you have to use chat to use GMail? I've never used chat in my life, but use Gmail every day.

meyerweb - i have a feeling that if you go into Talk, you'll see your contacts because (by default) the "automatically sign in" is checked. therefore, it is enabled although you never use google chat. i'm trying to figure out how to "sign out" from the Talk feature. And no i dont think that Talk needs to be on to use GMail. However, i think there's a GTALK service thats running in the background that controls for both Gmail and Talk.

Sorry, I guess I misunderstood what you were asking.

Yes, automatically signed in was set when I got my phone. I turned it off in the settings menu in Gtalk, and then signed out. (If you open Talk, tap menu, then More, you'll see one of the options is Sign Out.)

IIRC, that didn't actually stop the service. Go into applications, choose Running Services, and close the Gtalk service.

After doing those things, I've not had Gtalk turning itself back on. It won't eliminate your contacts in gtalk, but it will keep them from being updated.


edit: Actually, now that I think about it, I found that GTalk was necessary for EAS email push to work properly. GMail seemed to work fine with talk running, however.
