Going from a 1st gen iPad to Nexus 7 impressions

I got my 1st gen iPad right after the iPad 2 was announced off craigslist for $300 bucks. Brand Spankin New. Still in the shrink wrap. I played around with the 2nd and 3d Gen Ipad's after they came out and honestly.....they're not that much different. Its a bit faster, but its definitely not worth $250 dollars more for the "upgrade".

Anyway, I traded it in at Gamestop for the pre-order because I felt like it was way too bulky, and I was a bit scared cause I wasn't sure if I'd like the smaller screen, but I was like screw it, let me take a risk. Plus they offered me $233 after the trade in bonus. So it cost me less than $20 bucks after taxes for it.

Best risk ever taken EVER. Its so much better. Chrome s on safari, and its SO much lighter and SO much more portable. Even the rubberized backing is amazing. I don't want to put it in a case cause i'td ruin how perfect this device is. The voice recognition is INSANE. It hasn't gotten anything wrong yet. one of my favorite features is how you can just say the website you want. I read manga, so I'll just say aloud "manga panda dot com" or "manga reader dot net", and it registers it instantly and loads up the page way faster than my ipad ever did. Google cloud is awesome too, I've uploaded my entire music library(like 5,000 songs) and it streams it flawlessly.

Anyway, I know some are on the fence with it, and honestly, there's only one way I think anyone would prefer the ipad and thats if you love iOS. In terms of whats better, the Nexus seriously takes a crap ALL over the 1st gen iPad. I can't say about the 2nd or 3rd gen, but it probably does too, cause they're too bulky as well and honestly iOS is not that great. Jellybean is buttaz.(lol)

Also I haven't experienced ANY hardware issues like glass separation, or software glitches, or anything and I even got it from my local gamestop in NY, @ 10am on Launch day. So that theory that b&m stores got the defective devices is not true. I even installed instagram off the APK link someone posted in the "apps that don't work" thread, and its awesome. Everything about this device rocks. Go get one.

1st android device and I'm definitely pleased.

Good to hear. Seems like a lot of people are freaking out over here so its nice to hear some positive experiences

I'm also coming from a 1st gen iPad. I absolutely love this Nexus 7. And I agree, the voice recognition is insane!

Finally an Apple user who can admit that actually like the Nexus tablet.

Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

I disagree... the iPad 2 is a big upgrade over the iPad 1... easier to hold, two cameras and faster. We have two iPad 2s and are happy...

That being said I already like my N7 as much as our iPads...

And I hate or Kindle Fire for not having native Google apps...

10 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Use the iPad as a Camera - TechEBlog

Cameras on tabs are practically useless. Theres no reason why it needs two cameras. lol

and eh, the iPad 2 is not that much easier to hold. its like 2 ounces lighter and still like a pound and a half. The only reason its thicker is cause of the OG ipad's curved back. On the sides it feels the same. the n7 is way lighter and so much more of a pleasure to hold.

N7 ftmfw. Never going back to a 10" or apple. Might give windows surface a peek though since I'm a windows phone guy. That said, right now i'm enjoying the best of both worlds.

ipad 1 was a long time ago....

I have a 3rd gen ipad, honestly not that impressed with the Nexus 7. Was originally planning on using the N7 for its portability (I'm a physician, N7 can fit in my white coat pocket), but now might just make do with lugging the ipad around more in my strap bag. The N7 is going back. My electronic medical records are in tiny fonts, and the N7 does a piss poor job rendering small text.

what a weak analysis...use a different pdf reader

I'm with you on this one. As a first gen ipad owner I knew the minute I held a Nexus that this was what I had been looking for all along.

The problem is most emr medical documents don't reflow, so to avoid horizontal scrolling, you need small fonts or larger screen. And no I can't just "use a different PDF reader" in Citrix and epic.

The small text rendering is definitely worse on nexus than iPad 3. Anyone who says otherwise is not being objective at all. There is a big drop off in clarity at text sizes smaller than the smallest menu text. This is probably not a problem for vast majority of users who use their tablets as toys or browsers, but it's a big limitation for those who read big documents with small text, such as scientific PDF journals. If I wanted to pan around a PDF all over the place, I would use my GNex and not bother with having another device that requires the same.

While I like the Nexus 7 form factor and weight that I bought, I still like the iPad more.

1. Screen scrolling and typing seem a lot smoother on the iPad.
2. More 'touches' to navigate compared to iPad
3. More primitive, less capable 'gestures' compared to iPad
4. Half the Tablet Apps don't work with the Nexus
5. I miss the Home button on the iPad - easier to turn on and off

I wasn't referring to the ipad 2's two cameras as being the advantage. I was referring to the fact that the iPad 1 had zero and the iPad 2 had some ...

I have found one good consistent use...

I sell a lot of stuff online and the eBay and Listia apps both allow you to post pictures directly in the app using the camera...

Have you fiddled with the font sizes?

There are several options - four to be exact...

Small
Normal <-- The default
Large
Huge
Go here: Settings > Display > Font Size

Well to be frank, the 10" screen is probably a better size for that application, is it not?
