So today, tired of the grime constantly getting stuck on the surface, the ruining of colors, and the general delayed response cause by it, I ripped my screen protector off. I've decided with an Oleo phobic coating and Gorilla Glass, it should stand up ok to daily wear and tear. If not, I have a warranty as well as insurance, so no big deal. I'll try to post screens of the phone after a week, 2 weeks, etc, to see if there's any degradation of quality or cosmetic scratches. Meanwhile, does anyone else going naked wanna share their experiences?

Nope. I got a skinomi screen protector. Great reviews and this is my first smartphone so I'm treating it like my first child (which I haven't had yet).

I got some of the stock AT&T ones. Ok, but no oleophobic coating meaning any sort of greese, grime, etc, instantly creates a layer of touch hampering ick. It should comfort you to know that the glass on your phone can handle this and this. Take good care of your new baby. :)

Didn't I read a thread here somewhere that said we had Gorilla Glass, but then discovered that we don't have it on the Captivates?

That would be odd and I don't remember reading that. Would you happen to have a link? Anyway the pocket change test, pen test, and razer test left no marks at all so I would assume we must. That or really strong glass?

These are threads that either suggest we actually DON'T have GGlass, or that it would still be wise to keep a screen protector on.

This thread here...the sentence where he says "However the screen is nice, and supposedly sports Samsung's take on the Gorilla Screen"

I never put screen protectors on my phones. I guess I'm quite the risk taker. :)

I went for three weeks without a screen protector on my first Captivate with no problems. Now going on two weeks without one on my second Captivate with no problems.

what happened to your first captivate that you had to get another one already?

I'm pretty sure we must have gorilla glass, because Samsung's press release says "The Samsung Galaxy S features a four-inch super AMOLED display, while weighing roughly 119 grams in a slim, highly durable design. The enhanced super AMOLED display is enabled in part by using Corning Gorilla glass as the protective cover." (source here). This seems to indicate that gorilla glass is a core part of how the Super AMOLED screen works, unless I'm reading wrong. None the less it says that Samsung is using Corning's gorilla glass.

Gorilla glass is NOT on our captivates. It is high temp glass. Does a good job. But I have a scratch on my screen...from CLEANING it...

I hate my screen protector because I lose some contrast...I can see how dark my actual screen(the part that shows) is compared to the screen protector....

Ugh! I dont know If I want to go no screen protector...

Really, after poking around Google, to me, it sounds more like Gorilla Glass is just overhyped a bit... It is more scratch resistant, but it's not scratch proof. It is less likely to break, but yes, if you drop it, it can break. Me, I'm keeping my screen protector on.

Given all the other posts with links back to Samsung that say it IS on the captivate, I would like to have you cite your source.

He is the source! He said he scratched his, therefore it cannot be Gorilla Glass!
:p

Gorilla Glass can be scratched though. Just read thru some of the theads I posted.

Keys might not do it, but something small like sand or grit that is rubbed into it (say by accident while cleaning) can scratch glass. (which in and of itself is composed mostly of silica)

Got my phone today, took two tries but I think I finally got the screen protector on right. Ended up buying the Skinomi screen protector from Amazon. Takes 12-24 hours to completely dry, which sucks, but after only 2 hours it's looking like there's practically nothing there. Only a few small air bubbles but those should be gone by the morning :D

Not trying to be a naysayer but you will notice that no where in the press release does it say that the Captivate (or any of the other telco tied versions) contain Gorilla Glass. The press release says that "Samsung Galaxy S Premium Smartphone" (notice a lack of s after Smartphone) has gorilla glass. This only says that their unlocked telco free phone has gorilla glass. It does not say that the Galaxy S line of phones has the glass only that the Galaxy S Premium Smartphone does.

I am starting to be very doubtful that any of the telco specific versions have it. I haven't seen ATT claim gorilla glass nor the other telcos.

I have an InvisShield on my phone and plan on keeping it on. It's not as nice as having no screen protector but given the "vagueness" of this talk about gorilla glass on these, I'm not taking it off.
