Droidos:

I am a possible Droid wannabe. I currently have a Palm Centro, which, although nothing like the Droid, does work well. The main thing I like about the Centro is that I use Datebk6, which is a replacement calendar app that works on the old Palm OS. Now, there is nothing like that calendar on Palm Pre, or iPhone. I am interested to know what users think about the Android calendar. Specifically, data entry is the key to me. My current Centro calendar allows me to save templates of frequently added events. I am a physician, and I have certain places and events that recur with an irregular schedule. Is there anything like that for the Android calendar, or a replacement app that might work?

From Treo 755p to a Samsung Moment... and back.

I started with a Palm Treo 755p, which is extremely similar to the Centro. I just used the standard calendar with the PalmOS, so I'm not sure if this will be MUCH help. Plus, I don't have a Motorola Droid, but I DO have a Samsung Moment right now. Granted, the Moment is Android 1.5 vs the Droid's 2.0, but from what I hear, the calendars are the same. I've only had it for about 14 days, but I can't stand it's functionality. The calendar is horrible, in my opinion. It's all Google based, which, I believe is the same as the Palm Pre. For my expectations of a "better OS", it has a terrible 30-day view. I have attempted to comply & have set up multiple calendars (Personal, Child 1, Child 2, Parent-with-Pancreatic Cancer, Parent-with-Prostate Cancer, etc), each using a different color in an attempt to duplicate the Treo's color coded categories. Unfortunately, the 30-day view makes everything one color. What's the point? In order to see my various "categories", I have to drill down to 7-day view. How is that a benefit when attempting to schedule around so many important appointments?

If you're still looking into the Droid... and still have questions regarding the Android's Google-based calendar data entry abilities, I'd be more than happy to help - if I can. However, I plan on returning my Samsung Moment & reactivating my Treo 755p on Monday. Clearly I haven't been impressed with anything to convince me a sub-par calendar is worth "getting over".

Sorry if this hasn't helped you one bit...

it's the google calendar, so you can email it or sms text it appointments as input, or input from any web connected device. By adding the "talk to me keyboard" on the droid, your input could be via voice to text.

Also this version of google calendar does do something that the google calendar on iphone does not do, it will show shared calendar data. So if you are sharing calendars with associates or whoever, you will get that too.

There's also lots of good widgets for displaying calendar info on your home screen.

hope this helps.

that shared calendars feature is quite is nice.. I made my wife and kids sign up... it can be accessed through the web and each person has a different colour... very handy..

what are your favourite calendar widgets? I'm using CalWidget... it has lots of different sizes and has an opacity option.

I have tried EVERY calendar widget, free and paid. Ironically, my favorite calendar widget is actually listed as a weather widget:

The Weather Forecast widget by Francois Deslandes combines weather plus calendar info. It offers every size of widget from 1x1 up to 4x4. The 4x4 is a full screen agenda view that integrates weather forecasts into each day.
