Good carrier for temporary data?

I'm only going to be in the states (California) for about a month. I don't need a big phone plan, because I'll exclusively be using my Hangouts number for texts/calls. I just need a data plan because I'm too weak-willed to unplug this summer.

What's a decently carrier to use to get good data coverage? I'd probably only need like 500mb to 1gb, since I'll likely spend most of my time in areas with WiFi. Not too keen on spending more than like $50 total, but I guess I'd pay more if the reception and quality was excellent.

Thanks in advance!

Hm ... California can be a real hit or miss depending where you're at. If the area you're going to (check Rootmetrics.com) has good coverage for T-Mobile I would suggest grabbing their $30 plan. It has 100 minutes, unlimited text, and 5 GB of high speed data for $30. These SIMs are usually sold at Walmart.
