I like the file explorer on my gtab 10.1 and my moto devices. I found the apk and want it on my GN but it won't let me install... do I seriously have to be rooted to do this or is it something with odexed and deodexed?

Anyone have one I can use? I even downloaded from Google code someone posted the apk I want over there but it won't install either.

I use Root Explorer and Astro. RE is paid, but it is invaluable for getting in the System/Apps directory on a rooted device.

What is the name of the file explorer you're trying to install?

Not sure why My Files.apk won't install for you. I can recommend ES File Explorer (Free) from the Market. It handles both sides of the fence.. Rooted and non rooted devices. Very good tool, has great options even FTP access. LAN and more... Even select files and drop them straight to GMail, Bluetooth and Drop Box.

And you got MyFiles installed on a Motorola device? I thought it would only work with TouchWiz since it's Samsung's app.

Well I don't know if its identical but my moto devices have an explorer with the same name. I tried installing said on my tab and it won't either. I'm wondering if its because of the type of system app it is ?

I agree, ES file explorer is a great tool. In addition to what's listed above it also has add-ons for a task manager, it does apk backups, cache cleaner, and a movie viewer.

ES File Explorer is the way to go.

Ok, that makes sense. I thought you somehow got the Samsung MyFiles onto a Motorola device.

For alternative file explorers, I personally use Root Explorer (which is paid). As stated above ES is a good choice. You might also want to check out ASTRO - it was updated recently with a new design and even has themes.

+1 on Root Explorer.. I purchased it and haven't given it much love lately since ES File Explorer was updated to better take control of root level access. Root Explorer is still a excellent choice for solid file management.

I personally love Linda File Manager... simple... maybe too simple for some. Astro or ES file explorer are good choices, too.

I use FileSlick. It's... well, slick. Root functionality (if you need that... I don't), swiping to examine files and folders, theme engine... it's really good. Takes getting used to the fact that tapping on a folder does nothing but highlight it, but it feels like something that should be built into ICS.
