Goodbye Moto X, I will miss you....

Well, I've had my trusty fantastic Moto X for over 2 years. It's been a fantastic phone. I love the ebony wood back on it and the size is perfect. It's the only phone I've ever had that is just as fast and smooth after over two full years as it was the day I got it. But it seems in order to get a really nice phone these days you pretty much have to go big. So, I bit the bullet and Saturday afternoon my brand new Nexus 6 P was delivered. It's definitely big! And it's taking I'm getting used to. But, it's a fantastic phone and it has marshmallow, which my Moto X was never going to get. If the Moto X was going to be updated to marshmallow I would definitely have kept using it as I love the phone. I'm keeping it as a backup phone, so its not gone forever. I'm a put my sim in it and fire it up every once in awhile just for nostalgia sake. So, I did this excellent section of the forums goodbye.

I got a 64gig Graphite. Would have got the Pure, but I need to see how Moto is going to do on updates for a year or more before I consider them again. FYI, my last 4 phones over the last 6 years have been Motorola, so this was a big decision to go non Motorola his time.

The Pure is a great phone. Enjoy it!

I'm holding onto my Moto X. I can't get used to these larger phones, and I keep holding out hope that Moto will release a smaller phone that has all of the great Moto features that I use all the time. The only thing I'm going to miss by not upgrading to a phone that has Android 6.0 is Doze. I reeaaaally wanted Doze on my Moto X.

I too need to replace my X but can't seem to find a suitable replacement. The X is just perfect size. Let us know how transition to such a large phone goes. I would also miss wave to wake, 6P has that feature?

Verizon currently has a promo to trade in any smartphone (even cracked) so its a great opportunity to upgrade my Moto. I need a nice camera because my first grandchild is 2 months old and my moto pictures just aren't as good as the ones my son takes on his Samsung. I like the Droid turbo 2 because of the shatterproof screen. I can customize the phone and let it go naked! I'll keep my moto as a back up for times I want a smaller phone, though those may be the times I also want a better camera than the Moto so it would be a dilemma. I will be doing a contract price so I can get the Droid for$0.00.

I know there is "bloatware" but I don't do gaming or anything, and it has removable memory (yay!) Maybe my aging eyes will like a bigger screen even if my jeans pockets won't. At least if it falls out it own't break.

Any reason I should NOT get it besides verizon bloatware and the huge size? Is there a Moto x version which is much better? The trade in guarantee of $200 is only for the Droid. Verizon only offers the Moto 2014, and I am staying with Verizon (absolutely) Maybe they will offer something better in the spring? But like I said, I have an iphone 4 that I can get $200 for right now!

I think the Droid has many of the features I love about my Moto 2013.

Cindy B1: I'm on VZ too, and while I'm leaning toward a Pure to succeed my MotoX2013, you've stated your needs and how your choices satisfy them. The VZW bloatware can be disabled though not removed, but then you can ignore it. My feedback is best wishes and enjoy your Droid Turbo2!

I'm in the same situation. Have had the Moto X 2013 on Verizon for 2 years. It's been the perfect phone. I feel like I'm betraying it but I want a new phone. I'm trying to decide between the 6P and the Moto X Pure. I'm so happy with Motorola and feel like I have to stay with them based on my Moto X experience. But the 6P looks sooooooo good.

(I've given up on having a phone the size of the Moto X. Who knows? Maybe I won't need a tablet anymore.)

I felt the same way when I got the 2014 X. Too big, and felt slippery, but quickly got used to it.

The 6P is another story. It is really a two hander, and it's sharp edges and smooth aluminum back has "you're gonna drop this" written all over it.

It IS nice to be back with a Nexus. I don't miss Moto's little glitches. But... as pretty as it is, it will be my first phone covered up by a case.

Went from 2013 X to pure edition. Got used to the size in about 3 days. Now I feel the old moto x feels like a toy in comparison and can't believe I used the little thing for so long. I absolutely love the size of the pure as its still very one handable for me. So much smaller as a whole than phones with equal or ever slightly smaller screen sizes

Did you replace the battery yourself, or did you have it done somewhere? I'm concerned about cracking the backing of the phone if I try to open it myself.

I did it myself using instructions from ifixit, and it was definitely not a simple task. I replaced the rear camera at the same time since it had stopped auto-focusing a couple of months back. I finally decided it was time to either fix it or find a new phone, hence I wasn't too concerned about breakage. Luckily, it came through just fine.

Several months ago I had the battery in my moto X replaced. I bought one off of Amazon for about $8. I have a friend that is really good at those types of things and I bought him a case of his favorite beer and it took him about 30 minutes to replace it. It looked easy when he was doing it, but I know I would have probably screwed it up pretty bad. It really made a big difference on my Moto X. I didn't realize how much the battery had degraded over a two year period. I went from getting about 8 - 10 hours of use back to getting well over 15 or so. Like I said in my original post, I would have kept the Moto X if it was going to get marshmallow. But, since it's not and I really wanted a fingerprint reader and fast updates, I went with the Nexus 6P.

I also got a quote from you break I fix. I think it was $40 for them to replace the battery including the cost of them purchasing the battery.

My windows phone barfed last week so I had to drag out the Moto X (2013) while I figured out what to buy as msoft wanted as much as I paid for it to service it. One of the reasons I had dumped the X for an unlocked windows phone was that the X was never going to get an update again. But, being forced to crank it up again, I decided to install Cyanogenmod 12.1 (CM12) and if I bricked it so what!

The install was a non-techy walk in the park and WOW, WOw, Wow. I am super impressed with CM12 and the X is as slick the dickens with it. I have TWRP and Titanium and can do unbelievable things with those two. I realize you have bit the bullet on the Samsung, but CM12 is a really great alternative to scrapping it.

I am in love with the Moto X all over again. I am even installing the nightlies just to ride a little closer to the edge. BUT, TWRP takes 54-seconds to backup the entire system in case something goes wrong. It is about as fast to roll it back too.

Never going back to windows or a carrier-based android, not when I can have updates every day.

AND total control over permissions for ALL apps. You remember the thing that google released with 4.3 and then hurriedly removed again? Well it lives on in CM12 and you can control every Permission in the app. Look for an app called AppOps to see just what control you have.

Is only possible with a small keyboard for me. I can get my pinky to hold the bottom of the phone, my 3 fingers to hold the back and my thumb to type. It's not ideal but possible if you really have to.
