I am in the process of totally eliminating Verizon from my life and my wife and my dad. I switched both of them out to Consumer cellular using just phones, not smartphones.
I saved each of them $50.00 each month. My next move is to dump the 5 Gig mifi device for connecting to a micropop provider who will guarantee 10mbps and unlimited data
for life. The towers are being sited as we speak and soon I give verizon the kiss off. Just think I will be able to stream and download movies and take advantage of Dish offerings or DirectTV
where that was impossible before. I will also have a robust wireless LAN for my property and my fee will be 58.00 a month.

All verizon would have had to do is let us keep unlimited data or run a goddamn wire to our village.

Verizon you are done would you like a tissue.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Verizon's got a great network but they want your soul to access it. I had to kick 'em to the curb myself. Glad to see you're freeing yourself from their draconian ways.

Your alternative for unlimited data on phone is to not get a smart phone? Seems if that was viable you could have just stayed with Verizon.

Verizon hasn't asked for my soul yet. In fact, they have given me discounts I wasn't even eligible for ($20 off data each month). I have the beat service and excellent 4G LTE so I will never complain.

Must feel good to get all that pent up anger out.

You can get verizon voice only for less than $20 a line with 5 lines if you have a family share plan.

But really, you need to evaluate your needs. Look at the price, coverage, reliability, phones, or whatever else you may deem important and choose accordingly. Verizon is typically more expensive but can be in line with the cheaper carriers, depending on your usage.

Just for clarification.
I have a smartphone Nexus 4 on Straighttalk. I put my wife and dad on Consumer cellular, 500 minutes $20.00 each a month. I am dumping my Verizon MIFFI at about
80-90 a month (capped plan) for unlimited wireless from a micropop at 10 mbps for 58.00 a month. Between the three of us we saved about $159.00 month.
My dad is on a fixed income as I am due to retirement. Its amazing how much money you can save by staying vigilant. I wil now be able to use Hopper, Genie or any other streaming type service from the Satellite providers. Could never have dreamed of that before. This puts rural people on an even playing field with cityslickers and burbans.

May not work for everyone but it works for me.

Is consumer cellular one of those companies that relies on other carriers towers for coverage? I know for a fact Straight Talk is not unlimited as they claim if you read their terms and conditions, because they use other carriers towers and data is 3rd priority as far as usage. If the companies that are prepay, or have smaller networks/rely on others for their company, and that suites your needs then all the power to you. I just don't understand why so many people boast about dropping Verizon when AT&T price plans (Share Everything types) are the same price. Ya TMobile and Sprint offer unlimited, but they have to draw constomers in some how, and that is how they do it. Look at the 4G LTE coverage maps, Verizon just straight up dominates that no question. They may not always get the rights to some of the phones like the S4 active (which btw they will when AT&T's short term rights expire) and others but their network expands faster than anyone hands down.

This is the question I like to ask:

Would you go into a BMW dealership expecting Ford prices? You pay for more, you pay for quality. Every carrying has it's negatives, but Verizon overall is the best.

Consumer cellular is an att mvno. Straight talk is an mvno of tmo att and Verizon. Neither have physical towers.

A few excerpts from straight talk:

"
Devices capable only of using data service are strictly prohibited and Your use of any such device is grounds for immediate deactivation and termination of your service without a refund.

The Straight Talk Unlimited Plan MAY NOT be used for unauthorized uses that adversely impact our service. Examples of unauthorized uses include, without limitation, the following: (i) continuous uninterrupted mobile to mobile or mobile to landline voice calls; (ii) automated text or picture messaging to another mobile device or e-mail address; (iii) uploading, downloading or streaming of uninterrupted continuous video; (iv) server devices or host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine-to-machine connections or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing; or (v) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections. A person engaged in unauthorized uses may have his/her service throttled and/or terminated. In some circumstances, Customers may be provided notice and an opportunity to take corrective action with respect to unauthorized uses before their service is terminated.

Straight Talk reserves the right to limit or reduce data throughput speeds or the amount of data transferred, and to deny or terminate Service, to anyone Straight Talk believes is using the Straight Talk Unlimited Talk, Text and Data Plan in an unauthorized manner or whose usage, in Straight Talk?s sole discretion, adversely impacts the Carrier?s network or customer service levels. Straight Talk will presume you are engaging in an unauthorized use in violation of these Terms and Conditions if in Straight Talk?s sole opinion, you are placing an abnormally high number of calls, or repeatedly placing calls of unusually long duration, or if your talk, text or Mobile Web usage is harmful or disruptive to the Carrier?s network or service levels.

Straight Talk may discontinue providing Service to you, discontinue your account, terminate data connections and/or reduce data throughput speeds for customers whose usage, in the sole judgment of Straight Talk: (1) appear likely to generate abnormally high call volumes or Mobile Web Access and data usage and/or abnormally long average call lengths or Mobile Web Access and data usage as compared to the usage of other Straight Talk customers; (2) may be harmful, disruptive, or interfere with the Carrier?s network, Straight Talk?s service or the ability to provide quality service to other customers."

I do not go into a BMW dealership expecting Ford prices.

However, @ 29.99 for Verizon Unlimited Data x 3 lines, I do get BMW service at Ford prices. I get quality and savings....all the while I sit back on my chair, put my hands behind the back of my head...and let...the magic happen.

Verizon is the best...Verizon is even better when people have cheap unlimited data. :D

what HE said.

it's great that you found something that will work for you and your family. for me, my money stays with verizon. i have too much at stake business and in my personal life to take chances with mid level carriers. verizon, while they may not be the perfect carrier, has not failed me with their network in over ten years. I'll pay higher prices for reliability and service.

What I did was free myself from expensive plans that wasted my money and my families. The money is better off in my
pockets and not verizons. Both Consumer Cellular phones have worked flawlessly and they are cheap to run and own.
My Nexus 4 on straighttalk is flawless, meets all my needs, has great power and has replaced my GPS and other devices.
I am ditching Verizon MIFI because it is capped and since I live in the middle of nowhere it is really impossible for me to
damage the network because of over-usage.

I found a replacement technology that will give me unlimited usage of the
network and will do so for 58.00 per month. Its a win win situation for me. If Verizon becomes more consumer friendly then
we will have to cross that bridge at that time. At this time there is no bridge and no bridges on the horizon. Or should I say
no more bridges to Verizon.

Are these the plans you talking about?

Like I said, if it fits your needs great. But again I still don't understand why people boast about leaving for a prepaid company, like it's actually BETTER. It may fit your needs better, but the network itself isn't better. As far as you straight talk goes, yes calling and txt are unlimited, but the data portion even though it claims to be, is not. Also as far as data goes, on any pre-praid company using another carriers towers, you are 3rd priority, which means you never get high end speeds. I am just warning you ahead of time, because if you do start racking up data, Straight Talk will cut you off/throttle the crap out of you.

T Mobile kind of bothers me with their recent World Wide coverage thing, because it is misleading. Again, when on those networks outside the U.S. you are most like 3rd priority data wise. But I think what bothers m the most the most is that they can't even cover the U.S. so they are going with a World Wide campaign. Now there is nothing wrong with having World Wide coverage of some kind, but a small % of U.S. cellular users have any real use for coverage outside the United States. The should be focus'd on covering the U.S. first.

Well they are... They are building towers. The world thing requires no leg work from them.. Just deals and money.. No tower building. So they can focus on getting the towers done here still and they just struck a deal with international carriers is all. Also sure you probably are 3rd priority if you are out-of the country but... That's for $0....Can't complain about paying nothing. If it bothers you when traveling internationally simply snag an international SIM..

They are expanding but.. Just don't have an abundance of cash like others.. So doing what they can. In towns great but outside definitely not.. Hence why they are cheaper to. Great for non travelers.
