I have to admit I love android devices, but I find this number extremely hard to believe. That's 1 million activations every two days.

Your thoughts?

There are so many Android devices out there, I can in a way believe it. But I see where your coming from.

It seems like a really high number, but given the number of subscribers using Android worldwide, I can see it being possible.

Android is taking off around the world in ways even in Android users in the US don't see. Like we got a report that in Kenya, a Huawei Android is the best seller smartphone there. Or how Indian manufacturers like MicroMax are making Androids that eat up Nokia's smartphone share in India. Android in particular are taking off really big in Japan. And in Korea. The UK and Germany are Android's epicenter in Europe, with France and the Netherlands coming up fast.

I didn't realize that Android has a HUGE international market penetration. Thanks for the clarification.

Now I wish the app developers produce some top notch apps to compete with iOS.

Now is this new activations? Or are they including the guy who gets a warranty replacement and activates the replacement? Don't know how much of a difference that would make, but was just something I was thinking about.

Still, either way it's big. I totally want one of those refrigerators with the Android touchscreen...my wife and I saw that commercial with the preggo lady, and I said to her, we totally need a fridge like that.

It might include people activating an old phone or a replacement like you said. It would be cool to see clarification on this.

Plus android is on appliances like fridges.

not trolling but imagine if your brand new highend samsung fridge with android interface gets a virus. it could be like stephan kings trucks (aka maximum overdrive), "honey the fridge just told me to go f**** my self". :P

Yeah it def. seems like a huge number but I guess anything is possible and why lie about it really?

Android phones dominate the low end smartphone space and that's a big market in Brazil India Russia China

Nice old movie reference ;)

Well, every tablet, phone, smartwatch, possible Google TV, any Android powered device really, including replacements are included in this count. Anything that uses the setup wizard and is android powered. Now one thing I don't know about is firmware updates or custom roms that require the device to be set up again.

500,000 activations a day with 4% week over week growth is crazy. the mathematical compounding and exponential growth on that is mind boggling.

LOL. This is great. I am at Sports Authority the other day and I see a treadmill with a familiar looking display ... I look at it closely and sure enough its running Android ... Not sure the version because my wife was rushing me .... Here's the link... There's a lot of Androids out there!

It is actually 4.4%, which means your calculations are low. Not picking, just stating that those INSANELY large numbers you posted might be low if they keep up this rate. Even if they slow down some, it would be crazy that by the end of the year it could be at 1,000,000 activations per day.

Imagine if they actually start to sell a decent number of tablets. This number would REALLY EXPLODE.

No. Google has already stated that they only count devices that ship "with Google" (as in, that include the Android Market). Other things that simply use the Android OS (like refrigerators) are specifically excluded from this calculation.

It probably also comes from people flashing a rom then reflashing roms constantly. (Like i do lol)

They are not flashed roms. They are new phones turned on. They covered this when steve jobs made the same statements.
