Ok Android Forum, help me with this question?

I sync my google contacts on my phone with my Outlook contacts on my notebook. I'm having to reformat my harddrive. Will doing this cause the contacts on my phone to delete?

make sure your contacts are also synced w/ your gmail account, and then you should be fine

Also, create a backup of your contacts to SD using ExportContacts in the market.

You might not be able to sync the contacts with your Gmail account, if the contacts are on the phone vs. being in Gmail.
