Welcome to Android Central! I moved this from the Android Apps forum to the General Help forum, since the former is intended for developers to promote their apps.

Google Docs should constantly sync/auto-update documents while you work on them, assuming you have a good web connection. (If you don't, it will wait until you're connected, and then sync.) Go to drive.google.com on your computer browser -- do you see it there?

In the future, when you start a new document, save it - even before you work on it. then it has a name, so it will get saved periodically. (An unnamed document can't get saved.)

Even if you don't title it, it should still auto-save as "Untitled Document" (I just tested it on my Pixel C). My suspicion is that while you were working on the document, you may not have been connected to the web, and so it wasn't auto-saving.
