Google EditionSamsung Galaxy S4

I read this story geek.com about a Google edition S4. I don't know if I believe it. If it is true what are the chances of HTC doing this. Here is a link to the story:

Samsung Galaxy S4 ‘Google Edition’ to be announced at Google I/O | Android | Geek.com

Pretty weak. The S4 version might be true, but it's basically a Samsung created AOSP ROM + SD Card Support without changing the button configuration. Big hot expensive mess!!

HTC could follow suit, but in my opinion it'd be a mistake to draw focus off of the features that come with the One, as that detracts from their overall campaign. It'd be cool to play with, but realistically you can just put Nova launcher or an AOSP or AOKP ROM on the One anyways and have the same thing/best of both worlds if that's what you want.

If this is true isn't this what most people on here and other forums complain and ask for from the oems

While having a stock android build is appealing insofar as you'd get OS updates "hot off the presses", there's lots of features I'm really liking on my HTC One that would (presumably) go away for this version of the phone:

  • Camera app: I like how it's designed vs what my nexus was running
  • Zoes/Events/Highlights
  • Blinkfeed: It's actually part of my daily flow using my phone and I'd miss it!
  • Contacts/People widget: I like these more than stock
  • Messaging: Prefer to stock
  • TV App: would that be supported? If not, another minus

Aside from some minor concern as to whether or not HTC (in conjunction w/T-Mobile in my case) is decent about eventually getting us the next couple key releases of Android in a reasonable period of time I really wouldn't feel much of an urge to get an HTC One equivalent of this if they did come out with it.

I think it makes more sense in the case of TouchWiz because TouchWiz is a more radical revamp than Sense 5. So, no, I'd stick with Sense 5 for now despite the few annoyances (that I'm now used to anyways).

I just installed nova launcher and viola a much more stock feel. However I did tweak it a bunch so for me it's better than stock.

Confirmed at Google I/O, available in 16gb only with totally stock Android. Yours for only $649, eek!

I suppose a One version is not beyond the realms of possibility, but if there were such a phone, would you want it? A large part of the One's uniqueness is it's custom software features, zoe, beats audio, blinkfeed etc, why take all that away? As jsntrenkler pointed out, you can drastically alter your user experience with customization and still keep all of those features

Stock Android out the box is convenient. ROMs are not a perfect solution because ROMs are always a work in progress. Having stock android tailored to your devices hardware out the box would be great for some people .

Absolutely true, but define 'some people'. Devs, modders and your tech head purists yes, they would all drool at the thought of a stock One, but 99.9% of the consumers who buy smartphones simply wouldn't know what to do with it. Those that would benefit from such a device already know how to do it anyway without dropping another fistfull of $, so where is the market? Where is the profit?

The stock S4 is a marketing tool for Samsung to answer some of the criticism the S4 has recieved and you can bet that they are losing money on each and every one. They, of course, can afford to do this whereas HTC cannot. When Bugatti launched the Veyron they sold them for $1million each, despite the fact that they cost almost four times as much to build, so why take such a massive loss? Because the Bugatti Veyron is now the worlds fastest production car, its the poster on every teenage boys bedroom wall and it is the measure against which every single one of its peers is now judged.

So much for the theory espoused around here that Google should take Samsung to task for defying their edict about no menu buttons! Google is so pissed they rewarded Samsung with a Nexus experience, menu button included.

They're selling it for 649. That isn't even close to a loss.

I was just thinking about this yesterday and was wondering if the button layout was going to be different. Have they confirmed that it will have the same buttons? I missed the I/O video on that.

It's the exact same phone, just with stock Android.
