Google Hangout SMS and Samsung GalaxyS3 Messaging App conflicts - pick one or the other

I was able to use Google Hangout SMS and the GalaxyS3 messaging apps without conflicts until my last Samsung update - that makes me pick one as the default app and deactivates the other one... no nice
I like the Galaxy S3 messaging app because it is integrated with other apps but does not have emojis... any suggestions on how to keep both actives or recommendations of a better texting app?
