Google has just admitted to spying and stealing private information from millions of Britons.

WHY IS SPRINT ASSOCIATED WITH GOOGLE? It has been under investigation in Britain. It has been caught, red handed. Its photo cars do not just have cameras on them. These google rats have wireless scanners that steal emails, lists, passwords, files, etc. as they cruise through a community. Don't believe it, then here's a link:

I have a Sprint HTC Evo, and am removing my contacts from the google site. This means that I won't be able to back up, sync, my contacts with google. Again, WHY IS SPRINT ASSOCIATED WITH GOOGLE? Google is stealing their customer's information, and selling it. WHY IS SPRINT ASSOCIATED WITH GOOGLE ? This is too, too slimy. For what its worth, I expressed my sentiments to Sprint in an email. I wonder if Sprint even cares.

I wonder how many companies have done similar things but haven't admitted to it. Look at all the times Facebook has been found to do pretty much the same thing with private information.

I, for one, keep my network secure, so this isn't an issue for me. If you keep your network open you have bigger potential problems than Google.

I would also consider wireless carriers a little more slimy than Google. If you don't like the way a business operates than don't spend money there. Vote with your pocket book and don't support them anymore.

Do yourself a favor, and listen to last weeks This Week In Google. Jeff Jarvis has some really, REALLY good insight about what's going on, how big a deal it really is, and who the people making all the noise about it are.

Pay close attention to the information that the companies involved (including your source link) are actually selling, and what all you can do with it for a measly 60 USD. :)

Edited to add:
What Google actually did, and admitted to doing, was gather data from open wireless networks for Street View and other location services. Unfortunately, people are generally stupid enough to transmit sensitive data unencrypted, over an open wifi AP, and it ended up getting collected. There's no indication that Google has done, or will do, anything with this data other than destroy it.

if you have nothing to hide, why does this matter?

personally i have my email with google, my calander with google, and my phonebook and voicemail on google. what are they gunna do with it? they arent calling me or anyone i know, or visiting me or my friends so what could they do with it? what matters is that they dont have your SS#, credit card, or address.

actually Google has my credit card number (Android Market) and Sprint has everything else. and i feel fine.

Anyone "out there" will only have the information you put "out there". If you're that concerned it's worth it to take control of your personal information.

I'm not too worried about Google, Sprint, etc. Their services, as of now, out weigh any privacy concerns for me. I appreciate the OPs original post and can understand it, you have to take control of your data. That being said, Google probably won't do anything with that data, I mean they probably already have more of it with just gmail accounts if they really wanted to do be shady.

First of all, Google didn't sell ANY of that data. You really should read the full background on this before making assumptions. Google added a feature to its cars that went around sucking up every piece of wifi data that was being pushed out from unsecured wireless access points. It was probably so they could map the access points like skyhook does for a gps alternative. This would be the same thing as if you were yelling in your house what you type in your email or yelling your password as you type it. If you don't want people to know it, be quieter. . If you are going to use a wireless technology make sure your radio waves don't become available to public by limiting the transmit power or encrypt them.

AGREED.

If you are useing a OPEN wifi network for sensitive data, you are honestly asking for it. Google is not what you need to worry about. Encrypt your wifi and all is well. You should be doing it anyway....

Also....this is OLD news. I heard about this over a month ago at least. Might have been longer.

Oh, so, someone walking in through you open front door and taking your things, is no big deal. Really ?

Gee, I wonder why it's of concern to some, like Britain, for instance, and Reuters; Huffington; and MSNBC. They must be lost souls. Imagine getting all excited about such a silly thing as privacy. What fools. Silly them.

Here's Reuters:

Here's Huffington:

Here's MSNBC:

Nobody said it wasn't serious. Google admitted to it and I'm sure they will be fined in more than one country. Did you see the link that I posted about them basically creating a privacy department?

Unless you live in a black hole then some company somewhere has personal information.

Problem is people are saying Google should be run out of business and that everyone should immediately stop using their services now. As if rogue employees have never done stupid things before. And Google was quick to react to the problem too, and admitted to it pretty much as soon as it was brought to their attention.

I mean seriously, if a company makes a mistake like this, what kind of reparations do they have to make to make people trust them? Apparently for some, death at the stake is the only solution, and I think that's ridiculously overreacting. It's as if no matter what Google does in response to this, it's not enough. It's sad, and I wish we could just move on already. The involved parties are already doing the necessary investigations, fines will be paid if required, the data is deleted, and we move on.

Holy cow, so, your relying on the notion that google has decided to investigate itself--it has appointed its own investigation czar. Oh, that's credible. What a joke.

And your "black hole" logic--hey, someone is getting murdered somewhere, so don't worry about it if you're next. Happens all the time. What's the problem ?

I know that it doesn't make any difference to you, but you might want to note that the "accidental" thing is google's story. They "accidentally", had multiple band wifi scanners on their vehicles, in order to take photos. I'll sell you the Brooklyn bridge for a nickel.

I believe your a joke.. Thinking that Google is the only company collecting information like this. If your safe with your things, this is not something you worry about. Just like downloading stuff on your pc that gets virus's. Be responsible! Plain and simple
