Google maps and google play issues

I've discovered a problem when using google maps on my Moto E 4g 2nd gen. I can't listen to music and use the turn by turn directions at the same time. I maybe able to listen to music for a few minutes then the Google play app quits working. This isn't a problem with my iPad, so wondering how I can fix it on my phone.

I believe that phone only has 1GB of RAM so it could be the phone running out of RAM to run those two apps.
