Google Maps navigation on Samsung phone - voice is sometimes too quiet and gives directions too late

I have set the voice level in Google Maps to "louder" and some to the directions are fine, volume-wise, but some of them are very quiet and come quite late - for instance, on a roundabout, the instruction to take the next exit off the roundabout comes just as I am exiting. Any suggestions? Thanks.
