Google Messages might let you ditch its flashy animations and message effects soon....

I've never heard of those animations. Sure glad they haven't yet rolled out to the Google Messages App version I'm running, and I sure hope there is indeed a way to turn them off if it ever comes to me (if not, pretty sure I'll be ditching Google Messages).

Exactly! I have no issue with flashy new fluff...as long as I have the choice to use it or not. I own my phone outright and I will always try to make it do what I want...not what some programmer wants!

So the "animations" are now happening for me, and no apparent way to disable them. WTF? Why the heck would/could google think that everyone wants this? I'll seriously be considering ditching Google Messages and going back to just Samsung Messages, if this remains as something that can't be disabled.

General Device/Android Settings, Accessibility, Visibility Enhancements, Remove Animations

I think that does it. Not yet 100 percent sure.

I don't think I'm aware of what other animations that setting also suppresses, so for me for now it does the job. As the article suggested, hopefully a proper suppression setting will come out soon, within the Messages App itself.
