I have Google Messages on my Moto g Pure. When I receive a new text message the ringtone doesn't play... nothing.
I set Textra as the default ant it worked fine. I even tried a couple other text message apps and they work fine also.
I've paired the phone with my android table. The ringtone sounds on the tablet but not on the phone when I have Google Messages
as the default.
Google Messages is up to date.

Any ideas why this isn't working??

First -- are you talking about messages that come in when you have the Messages app open on the phone to that same message thread? If so, that's normal behavior for the app. The idea is that if you have the app open to that thread, you're already looking at it and don't need the audible notification that a message just came in. (I realize there are situations where an audible notification can still be useful, but this is how Google Messages works.)

If it's not sounding even when Messages isn't open, then it probably has to do with using the tablet. Try temporarily disconnecting the tablet from the phone and see if the notification sounds come back.

No.
I'm talking about the phone is on and just sitting there.
When I receive a text message, I don't even know it because there is no alert sound.
Works fine with Textra and several other apps I've tried.

So even with the tablet unpaired, you're still not getting audible notifications from Google Messages on the phone?

Do you have Google Message for Web set up on any computer?

On the phone, go to Settings>Apps>Messages>Notifications>Default Settings. Do you see a bell icon next to Incoming Messages? Tap that and look at the Sound option -- try changing the default notification tone to see if that makes a difference.
