Google Messages - RCS not falling back to SMS

Since some friends & I began using RCS in Google Messages, we've found some messages are not being delivered. When the receiving phone is not connected to the Internet, RCS is not automatically falling back to SMS, even when that option is selected in Google Messages settings.

When active, this setting is supposed to ensure the message will be sent as an SMS if RCS fails. It doesn't work.

During my experiments I've seen the Google Messages app display a message saying the receiver will receive message when they are back online.

The fact that this message is displayed indicates the app will NOT automatically fall back to SMS when RCS fails due to connectivity issues, even though there is a setting within the app that says it has this functionality. This seems contradictory and is confusing.

I never had these problems when using the Samsung Messages app. It switched between SMS and data messaging instantly and automatically, dependant on the Internet connection status of the two handsets.

I haven't noticed or been alerted to any sent messages not being delivered – with both 'RCS chats' & 'Automatically resend as text (SMS/MMS)' turned on.

Although I do get a lot of those blue down-arrow's — that you need to connect to wi-fi or data before the message will download — from both misc and group sender's.
Which is kinda annoying, as each time I get the blue down-arrow . . I need to
connect to wi-fi in order for the incoming message to download — from both iOS and Android senders, as far as I know. Perhaps they're sending in RCS, which then requires me (the recipient) to have wi-fi or data turned on? But not sure if they all are.

Have you read the RCS chats > 'Learn more about RCS chats' > 'Troubleshooting' help section, or sent feedback therein to Google?

It won't and never has. Google has yet to fix this among the 20 other things.

Edit. I originally deleted this statement but see you brought it up. Samsung Messages does indeed work properly as does crossdevice messaging. It just doesn't have a damn spam filter.

I suggest sticking with Samsung Messages since you have the ability to do so.
