Another Android iteration has increased the level of "Google-integration", with additional AOSP apps replaced by proprietary versions. I'm wondering which of these apps (or any "system" apps) are others disabling, and what's the replacement.

I just started setting up my N5. I installed the app formerly known as "Messaging" and disabled Hangouts. I always use QuickPic, so that will replace what Google replaced Gallery with, namely Google Photos. There will be more.

Is it possible to configure QuickPic to include non-local albums (such as Auto Backup and google+ albums)? Is Gallery totally removed from N5/KK?

Surprisingly, I have not felt the need to disable anything yet. Nothing has really annoyed me enough to have to do that.

I kind of like having Hangouts as my SMS app. It is one less app I have to keep track of. Unlike iProducts, I always have the option of installing an SMS app if I really want them separate again. Android is awesome because choice is awesome.

I like the vanilla gallery app. When I had my HTC Rezound, I actually went out of my way to install it because I hated Sense so much.

I gave up with Hangout and replaced it with 8SMS App ( from ThinkLeft that Supports Kit Kat). Then I deleted every email address in my GMail Contact list that Sync's from my Laptop since it made two contacts records on my N5 for every email plus cell number. So I was moving from Yahoo mail to Gmail but that just got reversed.

I'm not aware of how to do that with QuickPic. Early leaks showed the Gallery missing, replaced by Google Photos, but the Gallery is actually still there for now. Will likely go the way of Messaging at some point.

Since I do not use hangouts I will most likely do this also. How is 8sms working for you?

Hangouts is a pretty nice app whether you use it for SMS or hangouts. I think many people don't understand the difference between hangouts and SMS and get confused and just revert back to another app by default.

It works better than my SMS App on my old phone that I had no issues with. Lots of my Hangout issues were learning curve but I like this SMS App. Hangout is going to need a lot more work before I use one App to do voice calls, video chat, texting and email all from one App. Was about to try Textra since it has more down loads but after looking at the pictures in the Play Store I decided to stay with this for now and see if someone else has something better.

This is the 8SMS that I picked.

You need to just get your contacts organized once and be done with it, its not that dramatic. And as an android user its very convenient to have all of your personal contacts as Google contacts.

i'm not disabling anything but i have changed settings to no stories/never auto sync for things like the stock News/Weather App.

i'm afraid of disabling stock preinstalled Google apps which could cause Gremlins in the device so i just let them go but make sure they are not set to sync in the background.

Just installed it on my nexus 5. Loks exactly like stock. Also send a few MMS to my iphone and they work fine!
