Google Nexus 5 - When it comes to customer service google is still a mess.

I purchased a nexus 5 as a gift for a friend. I called google to as how the warranty works, and they said I would have to transfer the warranty over through them. They sent him an email, and he had to reply it with my name, order number and imei etc. This is not good service at all, why not just go off the serial number to see if it's still within warranty.
