Although I do agree that there's a lack of Nexus 6 info, why would the Nexus 9 be in any different of a situation? It not only will run the same OS and the same apps as the Nexus 6, it's going to be doing it with at 64-bit CPU. The Nexus 9 is still available for pre-order, and still says it will leave the warehouse by November 3 (which is only a couple days away). So, if anything, the N9 will need even more immediate app updates out of the box - but is that a big deal?
I do wonder what is going on with the N6, but I don't think it's as dire as you're predicting.

This. There's a whole lot of speculation the OP has going on, based on rumors, feelings, and what people think.
Nearly every major tech site has a review unit in their hand. I'm sure they are using the phone as their day-to-day and writing up reviews, which may take a week or two. Droid Life did an unboxing, hands-on, and brief Q&A with their review Nexus, so we know the phone exists and from his use, it looks and runs great. I'm sure we'll get more actual information over the next few weeks.

I'm seeing a lot of numbers of inventory thrown out with no actual data - just assumptions. When a competitor sells out in record time they're treated with acclaim for their business prowess. No one that actually knows anything has made a statement of any kind about this being a failure or a triumph. Why is it terrific for Apple to sell out in 40 seconds but terrible for Google to do the same thing? The entire point is that no one knows anything. Why all the hate? When someone actually says, "yeah ... we totally misunderstood the market and didn't manage inventory correctly" or anything like that, then yes - slap their hand, etc. There is no evidence of any kind to indicate that is what happened here... other than the anger of random internet trolls - which we know is inadmissible.

Google mismanaged press/media surrounding these products. What they did wrong was announce the products a little too early in the sense that we - their fans - wanted more information than what they were willing/able to give at the moment. Adding to that, they took preorders when they obviously weren't ready to. Lastly, as of now, they haven't commented on any of it (and likely won't). But, everything else is business as usual.
For example: NDA's are normal and the NDA's surrounding the N6 is very typical (reviews aren't supposed to go live until shortly before the product is actually released; not when the reviewers get it in their hands). If the software isn't finalized (again, VERY common at this stage) then it's obvious why they wouldn't want critics commenting on unfinished software and instead wait for final code.
Also, it's very common for all companies to be making software tweaks days, even hours before a product is announced. Products aren't done vastly early and most review units are pre-final software, hence why reviewers often times ignore certain issues they find assuming it's a beta device issue. Even Apple, as you mention, is susceptible to this (most recently, iOS 8.01, 8.02 and 8.1 all released in rapid succession to address issues that were easily identifiable by Apple prior to release.
At the end of the day, though, Google made the mistake of mismanaging the announcement timing and preorder phase. It was really just too soon. Never should announce something when you aren't ready to give information. They also could have just underestimated this Nexus 6 launch, thinking it was going to be more niche and perhaps it's getting more attention than previous years.

As already asked... Did you try and buy one? I was at work from 6 am - 4 pm on October 29... I had the Nexus 6 purchase page open all day... Rumors were all over the place on when they would start taking preorders... Every reasonable expectation was 11 am PST which was 1 pm CST my time... so at 1 pm I pulled up the page as I had numerous times all day and it said "Coming soon" I just stared hitting F5 every 5 - 10 seconds and all of a sudden it went to SOLD OUT.... We are not talking 40 seconds... All day long until about 1:01 CST it said "Coming Soon" and then went to "SOLD OUT" over the next two hours it went in and out... I actually got the "Buy it now" button 5 times in total... 3 times I clicked buy it now and it went to a "nothing in your cart" screen and twice it went to a cart only to click proceed to check out and it say "oops.. nothing in your cart again"
iPhone comp is completely irrelevant as the iPhone is by far the largest selling single model of phone in the world... The iPhone brand is second to none in the smart phone world, and a large number of those iPhones on opening day are sold under contract extensions with customers not outright full retail sales... The Nexus community as a whole is only a fraction of the iPhone market (Yes android as a whole outnumbers iPhone sales and use but no individual phone can top iPhone sales) Factor in 60% of most polls had people saying the Nexus 6 was too big and then the outrage that originally flowed out at the $650 - $700 price..... Based on size, price, limitation to the US market and outright full retail price plus how quickly it sold out... You can make a half way decent assumption they didn't make all that many available on the play store...
How many??? I don't know... Google has never really revealed sales numbers on previous Nexus models before... Rumor is they held back the majority of their devices for carriers and contract sales... I just have no clue how many "not that many" is..... but to literally go from coming soon to sold out within a 5 - 10 second refresh window on my computer..... That is outrageous.... But as long as T-Mobile isn't pulling my chain I hopefully will be able to go to my local T-Mobile store at 10 on 11/12 and walk out with one for the same price...

double tap to wake isn't even something that is advertised on the phone. i don't get how that can be a reason that it is not ready. there are way too many factors that could be in play here to negate 90% of the rest also. for instance...
they have carriers and such that they are having to supply. so there goes your pre-orders argument.
the nda... the nda looks to be more of a lollipop thing than a nexus thing. blogs are talking about the nexus a bit. although skirting on the thin lines of the nda to do it. but they are not talking about lollipop. of which... lollipop has not been released. so there goes your nda argument.

On the Android central podcast Phil did hint at there being some kind of NDA, and there are some cool things in Lolipop that he couldn't talk about. I don't view that as a negative.

Lollipop has been announced; not released. It's being released Monday. On Monday, the rest of the features that are in 5.0 are fair game. Some features will be in 5.0.2. The device is announced, pre-orders have started; the device goes on sale later. The embargo will be lifted when the device is on sale, if not before.
