Lots of the ROMS are claiming the ability to allow the sending and receiving of SMS. However, I can't ever get it to work on Verizon.

In my situation, I am using the sim from my phone to activate my Nexus 7. My phone plan includes unlimited data and texting.

The unlimited data works great in my tablet, but the same can't be said for the texting. I was able to send SMS to my Google voice number abd receive it from within the Google voice app. However I am unable to receive any SMS messages.

I am guessing one of the reasons could be that I am using a Non-VZW device.

Regardless, this isn't a huge deal. I was just curious if others had gotten it to work.

I use Google Voice for 98% of my texting anyway.

I also know that I could probably use the Verizon Messages app. Just curious if anyone was able to use a ROM to get native SMS support while on Big Red.

I was trying to install the standard messaging app from Jellybean, but would be open to using any app and was more curious if anybody got it to work through any means, but, based on additional research, I don't think it's possible.

Mighty Text works good for me. Find it in the Play Store.

For the factory ROMs, I am under the impression there is no SMS texting after Android 4.3 (for data plan tablets) due to a decision made by Google Android engineering in autumn, 2013. Lots of upset customers last winter, since companies such as T-Mobile include unlimited SMS on tablet plans. That is, SMS functioning (or not) is determined by the authoritarians at Google, not your provider.

And that's why I stick to 4.3 on both generations of Nexus 7's. Also the permission manager is available in that ROM as well. (Nice features w/o rooting, IMHO)

That is my impression as well but I have just got the Lollipop OTA update and noticed that 8sms is now sending SMS OK whereas with KitKat it did not. The stock Google lollipop SMS app Messenger install reports "not compatible with your device" as expected so does anybody know what is going on here? (Nexus 7 LTE)
