Google Now update - wifi vs. cellular data connectivity question?

Every review I read about the Google Nexus 7 happens to mention Google Now and its capabilities. For example:

The Nexus 7 even includes an artificial-intelligence feature, following in the path of Apple's much-touted Siri. It answers some spoken questions, like Siri does. But it also presents a screen, called Google Now, with information it considers relevant to you at your present location and time—like the weather, traffic conditions between home and work, your next calendar appointment, and information for flights you've been researching.

My question: If the Nexus 7 does not have 3G/4G cellular data connectivity question, how does it know or update my flight status for example when I get to the airport? What if the airport doesn't have free wifi and I don't pay for it? How will Google Now update the flight information or even local weather information for me if it doesn't have a data connection? Will it even know I reached the airport?

You won't, personally I think Google now was more so intended for the galaxy nexus.

Root your phone.

Connect N7 to hotspot

I have been wondering the same thing but I think Google is sensing a shift in cellular data plans (e.g. Verizon share plans) where hotspot is no longer an additional feature. So, you will have your Nexus 7 connected via hotspot to your phone's data plan and that is how Google Now will update.

The GPS will determine where you are. Also if you have Wifi on(regardless of whether your on a hotspot or not) it can use other locked or unlocked Wifi spots to determine location. It will request you turn on Wifi in apps like Latitude for just that reason. (GPS listed in the specs https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...us/?playredirect=true&hl=en-US&token=qcLyXFLc )

It certainly will not work as quickly as the Galaxy Nexus will, but it should work.

Thank you for this response, I spent most of yesterday trying to figure this out. I couldn't understand why Google Now was being promoted on the N7, but not actually functional.

I do know Navigation works without being connected.

I think Google Now is really meant for phones more than the N7. Its an awesome feature of Jelly Bean. The N7 just happens to be the first Jelly Bean device. But as everyone has stated, I guess there are a few ways for it to be effective on the N7 as well.

One thing I noticed with the Nexus 7 is that you are eating at a restaurant with WiFi and click navigate home right before you leave the map loads all the way to your home so you can navigate home without having a WiFi connection.
