Since I got the Note 8 (when it first was released) I noticed my Google Photos only back up (upload to google) when I open the application. On all my other androids it auto backed up without me having to open the app. I have searched all the settings and I can not find anything.

Its a minor thing but when I go to look on the computer, hours or days later, it is annoying to have to open the app and wait for the uploads

Thanks in Advance!

Have you made sure the app's background data isn't restricted or you're not using any battery saving apps/mode? Also, are you roaming? Unfortunately GPhotos removed a lot of the options (basically all of them) for when and how to back up, so now it does it automagically, but I've never figured out how it chooses when to upload (which sux). The only times I've noticed it does wait for me to either open the app or be plugged in/WiFi is when I'm roaming.

You can also try the old trick of clearing the app's cache or signing out/signing back in.

I had the same problem. Make sure Google Photos is set to synch and/ or selected to back up only when connected to Wi-Fi. Also check and see if your Google app is the most recent version.

My Google photos are only backing up on WiFi unless I change it manually but I'm on unlimited WiFi connection all the time between work/home so only enable data for it on holidays in other European countries (free roaming)

Even if it's 'free' roaming, if the phone is not in its home network, it will show as roaming for apps that poll for this status.

Then those apps can update when until I get home :-)
I'm in Europe and Home network IS Europe, paying a bit dearly for it though but I get 2 hours of free calls to the US as well included which is important to me

After reading the replies I started changing my settings one by one and seeing if it made any difference. When I was done, I had put it back to my original settings and it started working!! Not sure why it didn't work for the past year but it is working now...

Yeah, sometimes forcing or clearing preferences in the app re-forces the app to sync. Stoopid Boogle.
