The "Free Up Space" function in Google Photos is great. If you have chosen to back up everything to Google Drive, when you run Free Up Space, it does just that. All of the duplicate photos sitting on your phone are removed.

But, it doesn't work on the N8 - as far as I can tell. Must be a setting I missed.

Any ideas on this?

Mine popped up just today. Maybe a certain gb threshold to meet first? Mine was 1.8gb to free up

Just a note that if you are backing up your photos using "high quality" (which is unlimited space on Google Photos), you are not necessarily backing up your photos in original quality - meaning it could have the resolution, compression, and or resolution altered. So, if you delete the original quality photos from your phone, I believe you'll only have the altered ones on Google Photos left.

I do backup using original quality this way if it's deleted from my phone, I will always have the original version backed up. The disadvantage of this is that these photos are not eligible for the free unlimited storage and will use your Google Drive space and you might not have enough space for all your photos (and therefore have to buy more storage).
