Google photos question

I use Photos on my G4 as well as gallery. I was trying to delete photos today, using photos, because it deletes them from the phone and the Google cloud. However, Photos now tells me it cannot delete from the SD card, that I have to use gallery to do that. I'm pretty sure I didn't have this issue before rooting. Is this something that is disabled after root? Any ideas or suggestions?

Google photos can't write/delete on the SD card because it doesn't yet implement the lollipop SD security api. (Check out the "save errors" threads in the Common Issues and Solutions sticky.)

It's certainly not a root issue, as it's happening on my non-rooted G4.

That's strange. I haven't seen that warning before until now. It used to work on the G4 before! I could delete in Google Photos and it would auto delete from SD card. Now it won't even let you delete it on the Google Photo app unless you tell it to launch Gallery. They must have changed it recently.

I agree, I swear it worked before.

It was definitely working before. This is stupid, because it won't even remember your decision to "launch gallery" on delete. You have to select it every time.

That's what Google Photos does.

I use an unrooted H815 and it does the same to me.

Like sswitzer said, it's because Photos hasn't implemented the SD card Security API that's introduced in Lollipop.

It wasn't like that just a week or 2 ago. I am pretty sure my G4 came with Lollipop. Something was changed recently, either the Google Photos app or there was an AT&T OS update on the G4. It used to be that you cannot Edit the photo on the SD card using Google Photos app editor, but you can definitely delete a picture on the SD card with the app. At least that's how it worked on my AT&T G4.

It's been happening on my H815 since the day I got it.

I was reading the user reviews on the Google Photos app and many said the recent update broke their phones' ability to delete pictures. I know on my wife's iPhone, the app can't do anything (delete, backup, etc..) when it is running in the background. In order to do anything, it has to be actively open. It was not a limitation of the iOS either, because Dropbox app could do backup in the background.
