Google Photos Unable to Backup 4K Video

I just realized Google Photos isn't/can't backup any of the 4k video I shoot because of the codec the Mate 9 uses. Does anybody know how to work around this?

Well Google Photos if it did backup your 4k video, it would count against ur storage. No free storage backup above 1080p 30fps.

Try manual press on the cloud icon on each 4K video. Huawei P20 pro doesn't seem to really upload any 4k movie, but after manually pressing it - it seems to upload and the upload is also visible in the notification pull down menu showing progress.

This is for a free unlimited account where Google downgrades to 1080. I'm using H265. On a slow 0.5Mbit/s connection, it first uploads as 360p and 30 minutes later - it's visible as 1080p.

On p20 pro, you can notice a big quality difference from 1080 to 4K - much more details. Also downscaled to 1080 in the cloud appears better than original 1080.
