Google Photos upload quality

I know with the Pixel Google gives free unlimited high quality uploads into Google Photos.

Does the same high quality still apply if the photo isn't taken by the Pixel camera?

In other words if I transfer photos taken elsewhere, then copied into my Pixel, will the uploads still be in high quality or down graded to the STD quality that offers free unlimited storage?

Just wondering if uploading everything from my Pixel gives better quality than uploading from my PC.

Thanks!

Hmm, the FAQ says "taken and uploaded from your phone". Does that mean only pictures taken and subsequently uploaded using the Pixel device are free or does it mean any pictures uploaded using the Pixel? I guess the wording would be "taken or uploaded..." if you could put pictures on your Pixel and upload at full resolution.

I had wallpapers on my phone. Seems to have uploaded at original size. They are about 15mb each. Don't see any compression happening.

Easy to test on your end and you should not take my word for it.

They'll upload full size, sure, but do they count against your storage limit? The key point is that the photos taken by and uploaded at original quality from the Pixel 2/2XL/3/3XL don't count against storage limits.

Only one way to find out. Test it . I don't have a need to be taking pictures with other phones/cameras and uploading them using Pixel.

But if I had to guess, the picture has to be taken by your Pixel phone for it to not count against your storage.

Thanks for the replies.

I kinda figured to get the high quality resolution the pic had to be taken by the Pixel but thought I'd ask.

I like to use a Sony camera on vacations and then upload to Photos and wondered if I used my Pixel to upload if I could get them saved in their original high quality.

The ones I have uploaded from my PC look good so maybe it's nothing to worry about but if I could get a better resolution using my Pixel to upload I would 😁

Glad you got everything figured out! :)
