"google Play services: Update Google Play Services" - Error after updating to Android 5.1

"Google Play services won't run unless you update Google Play services."

This keeps popping up on my phone after upgrading to 5.1...

A little background. I forced an update of Google Play services to version 8.1.14 (2244331-036) last week so I could get the new Android Pay.
I now just updated to Android 5.1, which I think would require a different version of Google Play services? Shouldn't the 036 change to 236?

If I click on the link it just takes me to the Play Store but doesn't show an update button.

What version of Google Play services should be on the Moto x (Verizon) Android 5.1?

Thank you,
Tom

BTW... I tried to update to Google Play services 8.1.15 (2250156-236)

But it will not let me press the INSTALL button. The button is on the bottom of the screen but it doesn't respond. Only the CANCEL button responds.

Thank you,
Tom

Snoking,

Are you on Android 5.1?

Re: "google Play services: Update Google Play Services" - Error after updating to Android 5.1

Tom;

I, too, was receiving the error message regarding the need to upgrade Google Play Services. My Moto X upgraded to Google Play Services 8.1.14 on its own over the weekend along with Android Pay (which I setup). After the Lollipop upgrade, I restarted my device after about 30 minutes. I continued to see the message about an hour later. I finally went into Settings>Apps and uninstalled updates to Google Play Services (this required removing Android Pay as a Device Administrator; resulting in the removal of all cards from Android Pay). It then updated to 8.1.4 and I've since stopped receiving the error. I then had to set back up Android Pay.

"resulting in the removal of all cards from Android Pay"

That is the line that may stop me from doing this. The problem is I have a Chase card that was carried over from Google Wallet. It is the card I use most. As of right now Chase isn't officially supported. I fear it may not let me put the card back into Android Pay.

Thanks,
Tom

Tom;

I also had two carry-over cards from Google Wallet that were present in Android Pay prior to this snafu. After re-installing Google Play Services I was able to add all previous cards to Android Pay (both supported banks, and non-supported banks [grandfathered cards]). So you should be able to add the Chase card back.

Tom;

It then updated to 8.1.4 and I've since stopped receiving the error. I then had to set back up Android Pay.

I just did this and now I'm on 7.8.99 and Android Pay needs an updated version.

Do I just have to wait for the latest Google Play services update or should I force it up. The play store is not showing an update for Google Play services.

What is the exact working version of Google Play services that should be on a Verizon Moto X with 5.1?

Most important is the last three digits. They used to be 036 (before 5.1 update) now they seem to be 7.8.99 (2134222-436)

What is your full version name for Google Play services?

Thank you for your help,
Tom

Re: "google Play services: Update Google Play Services" - Error after updating to Android 5.1

Tom,

Is Android Pay working for you with that old version?

Thanks,
Tom

Eckchually...lol...I hadn't been using it and decided to re-learn the process and discovered I hadn't updated to my new CC number OR my new checking account at a different bank.

So...I wait for a free (less than $1.00) authorization deposit email.

Sorry.

I think you're referring to Google Wallet not the new Android Pay... This is the confusion Google has created between the two products.

Original Google Wallet: Credit Card (tap & pay), Checking Account (send money to other people)

New App Google Wallet: Checking Account (send money to other people)
New Android Pay (update to original Google Wallet) : Now used to store member cards from stores, Credit Cards (tap & pay)

I hope this clears up the confusion of Android Pay and Google Wallet.

Re: "google Play services: Update Google Play Services" - Error after updating to Android 5.1

Yep, Tommy, there's still a bunch of confusion...but...Android Pay (when it rolls out) will replace the existing Wallet app. A new app, also named Wallet, would have to be installed for the functions you've described.

I was just getting my s...tuff together waiting on the Android Pay app and needed the correct institution info in place.

Re: "google Play services: Update Google Play Services" - Error after updating to Android 5.1

I forced the install of Android Pay and Google Play services while still on 4.4.4 and everything was working fine. Now after the update to 5.1, I guess I'll have to wait for the update of Google Play services before I can use Android Pay again. My own fault for not be patient and waiting for the official release.

Re: "google Play services: Update Google Play Services" - Error after updating to Android 5.1

Okay... Mine updated at some point to Google Play services 8.1.15 (2250156-236)

Re: "google Play services: Update Google Play Services" - Error after updating to Android 5.1

So...got my (less than $1.00) deposit from El Goog and opened Wallet to try to confirm the account and...IT UPDATED TO ANDROID PAY!

And...when I was finally able to position the debit card in the camera frame correctly (fumble fingers here)...my Institution for Checking is not playing with Android Pay yet!

Grrrr!

Edit: And THEN...just for giggles I tapped the old Wallet app icon and was nagged to update it to the NEW (and improved??) Wallet...so I did and when that installed and I opened it, the new *Virtual* CC account (that was created from the *actual* CC account that used to be in the old Wallet app and is now in Android Pay appeared...AND there was a Notification blinking, so I opened that...and discovered it wanted me to enter the (less than $1.00) amount that was deposited by El Goog in my checking account at my new Institution...so I did and now that account is added to my new Wallet that I can choose if I ever want to send money to anyone with an email address...ever!

But, of course, I can't use that Checking account for Tap & Pay cuz...well, you know, you've gotta use Android Pay for that...but not from my checking account cuz...well, you know...see the first part of this post before this crazy edit!

With out quoting or editing my 1AM post I'll just add that...I've not used a PW, PIN or Pattern on any of my Motos (going back to the OG Droid with the slider!), now off into *another* new experience!

Oh Happy Days!

Re: "google Play services: Update Google Play Services" - Error after updating to Android 5.1

How do you reinstall Google Play Services if the system does not allow you to access Google Play? I receive a message of "Check your Connection and Try again" when I click on the Google Play app. Then I cannot "update" as it tells me that I "Update Google Play services. " When I click on this I am sent to a page with my google account and a list for Redeem, Settings, and Help & Feedback" none of which work (I click but they are disabled).

Help! :'(
