Google play services

What does it exactly do?
I have been noticing that my phone wakes up randomly for a short period of time and i also noticed that network location (or something similar to that, with google play services icon) has been running more often now. So i froze it with TI and so far so good. Any adverse effects from this?

Google Play services is used to update Google apps and apps from Google Play. This component gives you access to Google Settings and helps apps speed up offline searches, provide more immersive maps, and improve performance.Apps may not work if you uninstall Google Play services. You probably need this component.

Had to enable it because YouTube wasn't working
