Google Play system issue

I've noticed that for the last couple weeks, I've been unable to check for an update for the Google Play system. Then yesterday, or thereabouts, I would update an app in the Play Store, but it wouldn't show up in the Recently updated list. Are these two issues one and the same? Why all of a sudden did it just start?
