google+ service eating battery

I have a Nexus 7 2013 with Android 5.0.2 installed. Battery life on my device had been reasonable until I upgraded to Android 5.0. When I upgraded to 5.0 even with battery saver turned on, I can rarely go a week without needing to charge. As best as I can tell the google+ service kicks in and keeps my tablet awake Since Sunday, google+ has keep the tablet awake for 17hrs, I generally do not use the google+ app on the tablet. And, as best as I can tell the service started to keep the device awake after I stopped using it.

Why does the service seem to kick in on its own? What is it doing? Why does it keep the tablet awake? Any ideas on how to prevent this from happening? Again, I don't recall ever having this problem with 4.4. Of course, it could be that an app or an update to an app is causing the problem..

Thanks

Do you have a lot of pictures backed up into the Google Cloud? Google, for some strange reason, tacked on the Google Photos cloud backup service into Google+ (something that will be changing it seems).... so if you had a bunch of pictures backed up into Google+, and bring a new device online, it starts to do some caching and syncing....

Bring up Google+... go through the settings and disable any notifications as well as the photo backup service (if enabled)... then monitor.
