Google Services Battery Drain

Hi everyone, new to the forums here.

Anyway, I've had an S5 through Verizon since July and love it. Everything is great...that is, until the past few days. I downloaded the 4.4.4 update 2 days ago with success and recently switched to Hangouts as my SMS which updated yesterday (not sure if that's irrelevant or not). Anyway, I've been noticing a serious battery drain lately. This morning I lost roughly 35% in 2 hours with VERY limited use, whereas before I would only lose 5-10% max. I decided to finally look at the battery screen and noticed "Google Services" is listed at 66%. I don't fully understand what exactly the percentages mean, but to me that seems like a HUGE number. My location is always at "Power Saving" so I don't think that is the issue. I also restarted my phone which didn't really do anything.

Anyone else having the same problem or any tips for how to get rid of this problem?

Try going into the Applications Manager, "All" tab. There, find Google Play Services. Uninstall updates, reboot, let it re-update itself (I recommend being on WiFi just in case these are large downloads hehe). Sometimes updates screw this one up.

Also, remember that while you may set your location settings to Power Saving, some apps like Google Now may actually use the GPS even if it's not turned on (and before you get the pitchforks out, it was right there in black and white when you turn the Google Now switch to ON).

When I go to Google Play Services, Uninstall Updates is grayed out and I cannot select it.

EDIT: Nevermind, figured out why I couldn't. Thank you! I'll see if that works.

Services has crept back up to around 60% again...any more tips? I appreciate the help!

Well, it will take up chunk of battery right now because you just forced it to re-update. I'd either wait another day or charge your phone to 100%, reboot just to keep things clean, and then see if it's still acting up.

Also make sure you don't have any location-aware services you don't use active, like location reporting (but this takes away most of Google Now's magic), weather widgets that auto update every 5 minutes, stuff like that.
