A friend says she's seeing this:

(my.email@gmail.com/android4ee4c05984fe)" signed off at Mon May 03 09:14:31 2010.
"My Name (my.email@gmail.com/android4ee4c05984fe)" signed on at Mon May 03 09:14:33 2010.
"My Name (my.email@gmail.com/android4ee4c05984fe)" signed off at Mon May 03 09:32:03 2010.

How can I stop this from happening? The phone is just sitting on my desk and not set to say I'm away when the screen is off.

im having similar issues with my Google Talk

I constantly open the app to find that "I've lost connection to the server. Your messages will be sent when your back online"

This is while connected to Wi-Fi as well as in a 3g service area. Its becoming really annoying when i get old messages via email when i should have received them fine using google talk

/miss blackberry messenger :(

Same issues here. Not sure what would be causing that.

As I said, "The phone is just sitting on my desk and not set to say I'm away when the screen is off. " So that option IS off. :(

Did you do the tip about disabling the Mobile networks -> enable always on setting?

I noticed that my AIM signs in and out constantly since disabling that to save battery life.

I haven't done this trick yet due to fears something like this may happen. So I can confirm that having "Mobile Networks Always On" still involves the Gtalk disconnecting issue

If you have Gtalk set to not disco, and it's disco-ing, your network is stopping while the phone sleeps.

As a test - plug phone into PC (charge only) overnight.
Set screen time out to never.
Have friend monitor Gtalk to see if it discos.

Mine was doing it last night, and it wasn't an issue with it sleeping, because I was using google talk while it was doing it. I would see a response, start typing, and before I could finish a sentence, I'd see the message that I'd been disconnected.

Also, I was also signed into my PC's google talk at the same time... so at least one was always connected.

Wife and I are having the same issues whether Mobile networks -> enable always on is checked or unchecked.
What's going on??? Is this normal for android? I hope not.

Wanna know what the issue is? Wifi sleep policy.

If you're using Wifi, after 15 min. the wifi goes dormant and disconnects obviously to save battery life. To disable this:

Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks > Wi-Fi Settings > Menu > Advanced > Wi-Fi Sleep Policy > Never

That will keep the wifi connected at all times. Obviously if you turn wifi off and just use the mobile network, GTalks connection will be determined by the network rather than wifi, but if you're using Wifi, that's the reason it's disconnecting.

Interesting. I'll check it out, thanks for posting this!

intesting! ill have to try this out later tonight. thanks

This seems like a logical solution.

Now im just curious how battery life would hold up running WiFi without a sleep policy

I've run both my Droid and my Incredible with the policy off from Day 1...obviously it's a drain on the battery, but it hasn't ruined either phone for me. Your mileage may vary based on how you use your phone tho, so for some it may not be possible to run it all the time.
