I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S Duos II running Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2

Couple of weeks ago I tried out the read out loud (TTS) feature on the Pocket app. It worked perfectly fine, and then a female TTS file started downloading. I assumed it was an update so I let it download, but it never completed. I left the phone on for 2 days hoping it would be completed, but not a single byte was downloaded.

I tried cancelling the update process but it kept coming back every once in a while, whenever I update an app or open a webpage, it came back and I had to keep tapping on it to cancel. It's been almost a month. As you can imagine it is driving me nuts.

I tried Google searching for a solution and found out that I'm not the only one with this kind of a problem. So, I tried several of the solutions some forum posts had mentioned, but none of them worked so far.

Here's what I tried so far -
  • Disabling Google TTS automatic updates
  • Removing the Google TTS Speech Recognition
  • Removing the Pocket app
  • Clearing download list
  • Clearing cache

Someone please help me solve this issue, I'm moments away from smashing my device on the ground.
Thanks in advance.

I just had the same problem and did a little look through my LG g2. What I did to get rid of the problem was go through language and inputs. Under speech should be the text to speech output. In there should be something saying "google text to speech engine" click settings and mess around in there to find the language that won't download.

On my Galaxy S3 running Jelly Bean I had this problem where the download of the female voice for Poland would not stop downloading.
Heres how I fixed it

Pull down the notifications window
Long press the dowload notification for the voice download
Press App Info which takes you to the Download Manager app info screen
Force stop the app
Immediately Disable the app
Press 'Clear Cache' and 'Clear Data' buttons
Restart the phone

To re-activate the download manager I went to the play store and downloaded an app. I got a message to ask me if ok to restart the download manager, I clicked OK. There's probably another way to enable the download manager but I couldn't find it in Settings -> Apps.

After this procedure I am no longer getting the annoying downloading of the voice file.

I've restarted the phone a couple of times to see if the downloading re-occurs but happy to say ITS GONE!

Alan Davies, You are a GENIUS!!

Your method worked like a charm. I'm no longer seeing the download and I couldn't be happier.
I've been looking for a solution for months and I was so close to smash my phone on the ground.

Thanks so much for sharing your solution. You're a life-saver :)

I tried what I thought was absolutely everything to try and stop this download on my new HTC One M8, but nothing seemed to work.

I completely disabled the Google text-to-speech app and cleared the cache and data for the app. I've then force stopped the download manager which stops the download temporarily only for it to come back a few seconds later.

Under VOICE in the Google search app I have turned Speech Output off.
Under "Offline speech recognition" I have turned off Auto Updates

Nothing seemed to get rid of this which is extremely annoying.

I think I then cracked it, when I cleared the cache for the actual Download Manager app. Fingers crossed it's not come back yet.

I actually think it is about time the phone manufacturers stopped filling phones full of rubbish when you buy them, and android should default to not auto updating apps. The consumer should have to choose to enable any feature when they first access it, not having all this turned on by default.

press & hold the ongoing download of "Female for english" - you will see app info - go to download manager and disable the download manager. The download will stop immediately.

Hello,

I'm facing the same reboot loop on an Alcatel Idol X. Force quitting the download manager as described prevents the immediate reboot loop, but after that all kinds of error messages about android system processes having stopped working are shown (acore, gapps, media...). And after a while so much has stopped working that it reboots eventually after a few minutes
Clear data apparently does nothing for me. After clicking yes in the confirmation pop-up the used space stays the same and after a reboot the download manager starts downloading/installing the text-to-speech thing again . Any help in solving this is greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Hello,

I'm still struggling with this issue. A factory reset would unfortunately result in data loss, so I'd really like to fix this in a way so a backup can be made. Does anybody have a clue why the "clear data" does nothing in my case?

Should I open a new thread with my problem? I didn't want to do that initially, because it's really the same problem as the original poster.

Kind regards,

Replying to Allan Davies post- THANK YOU for figuring this out. I want to add that - for reinstalling the download app, if your phone (mine's a Moto G 1st gen) is running 5.1: in the apps listing swipe to the left and the column for disabled apps appears. You'll see the download app listed and can reinstall it from there.
